Books are garbage. Show is entertaining garbage. There's a reason they dont talk about the horrible writing of GRRM on /lit/. Wish /tv/ had the same standards regarding capeshit.
>>
I read the first book after watching the first few season, and honestly, I felt like I wasted my time.

The show followed the book closely except for scenes where they were walking for chapters at a time, and some of the battles.

And really, I don't want to watch the characters walking from place to place, and the show didn't have the budget to show the battles in detail, (or at least they didn't at the time) so I can forgive that.

>Don't bother reading the books. Show is better.

Stephen Dillane did a great job, but D&D srsly butchered the character.

He was more like a non-charismatic edd stark but in the show is just a yo-yo between random evil guy and filler
>>
>implying /tv/ reads books

The most this board can handle is a comic books with about one page worth of dialogue in the whole thing.
>>
the book has shit like a 300 feet tall carriage that Cersei rides everywhere for some reason.

Tyrion is a gymnast dwarf who often does backflips out of the blue

Jon is bipolar and cries all the time

Well idk how to tell it then, in the books he got a more central role and its a stable character with clear objectives and convictions, something that the show didnt represent at all most of the time and even contradicted.

This is how tall the wall is in the books.

The Mountain is a fuckhuge dude fighting in double-thick plate armour while using a fuckhuge shield and two-hander at the same time, not some lanky dude in leather and maille, or some rosy-cheeked baby-looking dude in leather and maille, only using a two-hander.
>>
The main difference is the books are a thousand pages long and a shitload of things happen. The show has to condense it to just the cliff-notes of the basic premise because there's way too much to adapt. Yet the show still finds time to fit in random sex scenes that aren't in the book.
>>
size of the iron throne.
>>
books don't have the intro song
>>
>>67644197
I started A Game of Thrones right after a run with LotR and Silmarillion, and I almost threw the book in the trash when reading the prologue because of how bad it's written.

I don't think Tolkien is some incredible author with a prose of a god, but it's easy to differ a scholar and a fat guy writing tv scripts all his life, and it really shows in the books.

How ever, taking the books for what they are they were kind off comfy. Haven't seen the series yet though, probably won't for a long time either
>>
>>67644490
She's still alive in the books. But there's a rumour going around that GRRM told the producers that it was going to happen in the next book, but he was probably just fucking with them.

Well he leaves his daughter in castle black with his wife and melisandre, and then marches ti Winterfell.

Probably his wife will burn her, as stannis and Shireen are separated.

Also the free men kneeled before him and march with him. Also some of the northmen.

There is much more, The North in this sea son changed too much.

>Shireen was burned by Show Stannis.

>Shireen was burned by Book Melisande.

Shireen gets burned either way, D&D wants you to believe there's no difference.
>>
>>67644597
Or Stannis isn't the one who burns her, and D&D just fucked up. They can't even keep track of the character motivations that are explicitly stated in the books that are out, I'm sure they'd find it quite easy to hear "Stannis' daughter is burnt alive" and just assume that it's Stannis who burns her despite it going entirely against what he's done so far. Or that they'd change it into him burning her to "streamline" the story.
>>
The book is written in a very limited third person perspective, which allows the narrative voice to switch between chapters. Epithets will be applied to people in the narration that match the character's attitude, assertions are made about people and their virtues and personalities that align with the character's judgments, and one can detect distortions in them compared with their 'objectively' reported actions. The show by contrast has a consistent narrative voice, which is 'modern television'

The book is full of minor characters that exist for flavor without having direct plot relevance.
>>
>>67644045
Thats only the first season, the show differs strongly in later ones.
And fuck you're retarted.
>>
>>67644682
But there is, and a lot.

Stannis is probably the King without shadow and will die vs Mary Sue Stormborn in the Neck

There is hardly any difference because "A Song of Ice and Fire" was easily one of the dullest franchise in the history of television franchises. Each episode following the boy cripple/lovable rogue and his pals from Winterfell/Kings Landing as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects? all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when G.R.R.M. vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody? just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for his books. The "A Song of Ice and Fire" series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

>But at least the books are ggood though!
The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "squatted in the grass."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Martin's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that he has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of A Game of Thrones by the same Stephen King! He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading A Game of Thrones at 16 or 17, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "A Game of Thrones" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.
>>
>>67643846
In the books Sansa becomes much more cunning and sly and I don't think that shows as much in the show

Also in the books, the potency of depravity in that universe is much more intense

They just upset the showfags (who at this point won't read the books because they're five seasons deep into garbage and already committed to finishing their mistake) and bookfags will either agree or troll and say "Double R doesn't know how to write for shit!"

No, stupid, he's an educated Lannister. He said "Hello."
>>
>>67643846

I'll give you three

1. In the books, the only questionable things Jaime Lannister does are push Bran out a window and fuck his sister and continue to fuck his sister after she gets into an arranged marriage with a guy who fucks everyone. When he returns to Kings Landing, he realizes Cersei never loved him the way he loved her and MOVES ON, becoming a pure hero with a total redemption arc. On the show after pushing Bran, he kills his cousin in an escape attempt, has a rapey session with Cersei, still keeps coming back to her, and is ready to do politically questionable things in Dorne.

2. In the books, Catelyn Stark is brought back from the dead by Thoros and replaces Beric as the head of the Brotherhood. She is on a crazy zombie Frey-killing spree.

3. Varys. In the books, Varys has a master plan to put "Aegon Targaryen" on the throne. Another teenager who has been readied to believe he is Aegon Targaryen, who escaped from the sack of Kings Landing. Whether or not this claim is true, Varys' plan at least makes some sense. On the show, with Aegon eliminated, Varys' plan seems to be to put Dany on the throne, which is presumably plan B after Viserys' death. If Vis and Dany were his plan - why the fuck did he send them out alone with a Dothraki khalasar, not speaking Dothraki, and with only Jorah to help of shit went wrong? The show is making Varys look like a dipshit.

In addition, Tyrion is getting extremely whitewashed (not racially, assholes, but on the good/evil scale of white/black)

The Sand Snakes thing was pandering while they decided what to do about the Greyjoys.

Don't list to people who complain about Stannis. Stannis is a dumbass in the books who comes across like he's under a spell with how clueless and stupid he is. On the show, he's a little more outright evil, but hey HE KILLS HIS BROTHER WITH BLACK MAGIC IN BOTH OF THEM. So if he isnt under a spell in the books, just as evil. Only people who like Stannis are middle children.

>irrelevant Loras sex scenes

Don't forget that they use them to portray themselves as progressive for having gay sex scenes, when they've actually ruined a gay character by making everything about him revolve around his gayness.

Loras isn't even a big character in the books and yet he's more developed than in the show.
