I got someone into movies. The person has no great knowledge of cinema, and is more into literature, but wants to discover new things.

The person, so far, likes Kubrick and has been exposed to some Malick films as well. The person is willing to watch several movies per day.

What should I recommend?

The person has read over a hundred crime novels, so if you know some God-tier detective/cop films, shoot.

Anything goes, it just has to be good.

I recommended a bunch of things, including pic-related.

But why?

Recommend some Bergman instead.

It's noir, it's a bit detective-like, it looks great, it's guaranteed to make some impression on someone who never watches movies.

I don't think starting with Bergman is a great idea, but convince me otherwise.

I read that he liked literature, so I immediately thought of Bergman (I think that Leone once also characterized Bergman as "creating literature through cinema, and cinema through literature"), but if the guy is particularly into crime stuff you might want to show him Chinatown, or some old French noir, or do some real cool shit and show him the Pusher Trilogy.

Don't show them dark city. It's first of all not a very good film but mostly just isn't really a noir but instead is sci fi a changes the rules halfway through the movie.

If you want to show them noir films show them The Big Sleep, White Heat, or Double Indemnity.
