I won't say I'm an expert but I've read a good amount of comics, mostly batman and spiderman. That said the level of intelligence and maturity of themes in American superhero comics vastly exceeds anything in manga or anime. Though I've never watched mutch anime I've seen the entirety of the dragonball/z/gt series and learn a lot through osmosis from my friends, who are all big anime fans.
