I think the show worked so well because he was doing other stuff while Angel was going on so I'd say jeff bell and the others that were taking over the full time duties put a lot of love into this show which is why I like this.
Greenwalt also does Grimm and it feels somewhat similar to Angel in a few ways but production values are lower than angel so that is really only sad part.

I watched a bunch of episodes last week to see how it holds up and it is still awesome. Its good that sensitive Josh was more involved with his other shows so he didnt fuck around with Angel

As annoying as Conner was the only thing that I really hated, was how at the end of the episode where Wesley kills his father it turned out not to be his father and a shapshifting cyborg instead. Tacking that on at the end just pissed me off so much

I only really enjoyed the first 2 seasons then it lost me when it got to Pylea because the quality dropped to 90's fantasy series tier.
I guess I just forced myself to watch it until the end, but when Season 5 started I couldn't believe how good the writing became, it was easily peak of the series. Illyria was my favorite character by the end of it.
