When it came out everyone on /tv/ was saying it's probably the best one of MCU at the time etc. Then I saw it, it was fun to watch as most Marvel movies, but nothing special really.

I actually liked parts of it. The F1 fight scene was pretty amazing imo. But the "Muh Burd" bad guy sucks, and the final CGI fight scene was pretty off-putting.
Moments of brilliants but thematically...limp.
It's not as bad as 3. Pepper Potts was the best part of that movie.

Also the music, which was a mix of hard rock awesomeness in the first, was simply done away with for Iron Man 2 and they made it all AC/DC. Not exaggerating - it was literally every song. And it wasn't like Queen doing Flash Gordon or Highlander and AC/DC wrote all the music for it or anything - it was all just old AC/DC music. It wore very thin, very quickly. They also replaced the composer of the film's score with the dude who did Hannah Montana.
The final fight between War Machine and Iron Man vs Whiplash was silly, and that resolution (where they blast-five each other just like back when THEY were fighting) was incredibly cheesy.
Look, it was fun at times, (the briefcase suit was awesome) but it certainly doesn't deserve to be called average or mediocre. It's a 3/10 movie.

I have never read an Iron Man comic book so I wasn't judging it at all on its faithfulness to the comics.
And just because AoU shittily retconned the end of Iron Man 3 doesn't make the end bad. That's a problem with AoU not addressing it, not a problem with Iron Man 3.
I liked the PTSD aspect of it, I liked that it was a Tony Stark movie and not an Iron Man movie. I think that it strayed very far from the standard capeshit formula before returning to it for the awful, crappy climax with all the suits. Also Shane Black was easily a much better director than Jon Favreau.
6/10 movie. Above the average shit that gets pumped out of Hollywood, but not by much.

People say that AoU was disliked because Avengers set the bar too high. This is false, AoU was just shitty in itself. But I think that's exactly what happened to Iron Man 2, Iron Man was just too good and 2 couldn't live up to it.
Iron Man 3 is the worst Marvel movie to me only topped by Age of Ultron.
