Because movies are no longer little creative projects you hope work out, they are billion dollar properties that need to be managed. They need a "safe" name to manage things. There's going to be like 100 people making the ultimate decisions, so a lot of who directs it is irrelevant from the studios' perspective.
They're too afraid to take a risk on someone unproven who may be talented who will end up clashing with the producers. Not saying he was talented, but Josh Trank, for example.
