Susannah, the disabled black person, arguably the second main protagonist, is racist as fuck and constantly insults Roland based on his race, but we can't have that because, as we all know, only whites can be racist.

By making the protagonist American rather than Japanese and changing the setting to 70s Britain rather than postwar Japan The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea loses a layer of subtextt, but arguably improves as a straightforward character study and a look at themes of masculinity, the cosmic urge and the idea of a 'natural' life.
The novel's subtext about postwar Japan being a bunch of castrated pussies who sold out their culture is interesting, but also gets so esoteric that it can kind of confuse the story of The Sailor unless you draw a direct link between prewar Japanese values and human nature. I understand that thinking but I also think it's a bit nuts.
