Has changing the gender or ethnicity of an iconic character actually ever made them more of a compelling protagonist?
>>
no. It is done literally because of an agenda against white privilege

Ellen Ripley was originally supposed to be a man
>>
No i dont think so and this would stay like that

A female character done right. She was a shitty person but also strong at times.
>>
>>67345347
This. Her character actually had depth as opposed to just being a fighter pilot cliche.

It's ridiculous how simple this sounds yet how usually nobody manages to get it right. How do others fuck it up so badly?

In a way, you're correct.

I can't think of a single instance of a female character being cast as male.

Are there any examples of this?

I fucking hate this.

I love Idris Elba, and I think he should have won an oscar for his performance in Beasts of No Nation.

But the main character is not black. It's that simple.
It's literally just forcing an agenda when you're deliberately changing the race of a character.

I would hate a black guy being substituted by a white guy too.

was that the only movie you saw last year then?

This isn't fucking reddit, you don't have to prove yourself to anybody, faggot.

It's unfair.

That's the only movie I think Idris Elba should have won an oscar for, yes.

It wouldn't matter if race was incidental to the story, but it isn't. Well, it would be LESS of an issue anyway. Susannah, the disabled black person, arguably the second main protagonist, is racist as fuck and constantly insults Roland based on his race, but we can't have that because, as we all know, only whites can be racist.

I just can't wait to see her cast as a white woman.

By making the protagonist American rather than Japanese and changing the setting to 70s Britain rather than postwar Japan The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea loses a layer of subtextt, but arguably improves as a straightforward character study and a look at themes of masculinity, the cosmic urge and the idea of a 'natural' life.

The novel's subtext about postwar Japan being a bunch of castrated pussies who sold out their culture is interesting, but also gets so esoteric that it can kind of confuse the story of The Sailor unless you draw a direct link between prewar Japanese values and human nature. I understand that thinking but I also think it's a bit nuts.

how is it racist? There is zero hate towards the man or his skin colour, he just thinks that it is a poor casting decision heavily influenced by the wrong people
