This and Don't Look Now, The Shining, Jacob's Ladder, and The Vanishing. I have a hard time figuring out the best one, but these are the only movies that truly made me lose sleep. Well in my adult life, at least. Hellraiser probably gave me the most nightmares.

Personally i prefer i saw the devil. Martyrs comes in 3rd in the New French horror race. Inside and High Tension are better imo.
This movie got me more sad than scared, and it lost a bit of steam by the end. Still good tho, 7-8/10.

Shock in film is not the same as shock in real life. You can't be 'shocked' even with some suspension of belief in a film, as it is not real. Shock in terms of 'shock horror film' means to go beyond a line which is deemed normal or average on average. Martyrs goes beyond were most budgeted horror goes, therefore is given the name 'shock horror'
You are probably one of them people who smile smugly/condescendingly when someone says a movie was scary. That individual more often than not doesn't literally mean it 'scared' them in the same way a literal monster raping them in their bed would 'scare' them, but expect you to understand the difference between film and real life and the emotions connected to both.

I am in more or less the same boat. Martyrs and Inside were both on my "to watch" list after a string of disappointing horror films. Inside, I personally loved. Martyrs, on the other hand, I just felt was unnecessary.
The tension of the home invasion was interesting, but upon the big reveal and the torture, I felt the movie itself was torturing me with how bad it had become. It felt like something an adolescent might dream up as a way to shock their friends and parents.
The people who are getting defensive about it in this thread are probably also children. It was just an okay horror movie, and as a movie without the horror genre to justify it, was mediocre at best. Not something I would watch again or recommend.
