There is definitely a lot of rumors and things working in Marvel right now. With the positive reception Punisher has had in Daredevil, I wouldn't be surprised if they gave him is own show. At the most he might get the Hulk treatment, appear in other people's shows and join up in The Defenders. Who knows, there are rumors for a Ghost Rider, Blade and Punisher series but nothing is confirmed so I wouldn't hold my hopes up. We'll have to see how things turn out when the Luke Cage and Iron First shows come out.

In regards to other movies he's not exactly a deep character, but for the Punisher he's definitely the deepest portrayal. A big part of the Punisher as a character is his ability to be stoic while still having charisma about him. 2004 allows him to have friends he cares about, he doesn't win every fight, he's much more vulnerable but also a more pragmatic fighter.
They might not have cared about the comics, but the comics have been apeing their portrayal for a while.

Punisher Warzone had the canon origin story and it was handled properly, the way all origin stories should be. Glossed over in the opening credits in 5 minutes, because who gives a fuck? Castle's family were killed in the crossfire of a huge gang war in Central Park.
