Hulu doesn't have everything from criterion.
I live in a room with limited space. I have no space for a tv, a dvd player/bluray player or a good soundsystem. I would like to but it just isn't a good idea.
I have adsl internet, so no it is not fast at all. Many streaming sites for tv channels (official ones from public channels) measure your internet speed and just don't give you the option to watch things in HD. Netflix in my country has some series but hardly as much as the USA which would force you to use a proxy cause tv channels own the rights to some shows which disallows them to be posted on Netflix.
We have no Hulu, no amazon video service..
So yeh that is why I pirate. Would I want to see the shows I like, which is popular media stuff from HBO etc. then I would have to get myself 4 different netflix like accounts and pay for all of them per month.
Even then many shows start out a lot later here than in the US. So you would always be spoiled online etc.
