So the movie is just good...?
>>
I watched it earlier too.

Foreshadowing: The Movie

I actually really liked it up until the ayyy.

John Goodman is always reliable and I legitimately didn't see his "apology acceptance" coming. I loved the sound design (the high pitched noise during the meal was amazing) and the claustrophobic camera work really worked well.

I just thought the ending dragged on too long and didn't achieve anything.
>>
>>67216016
Thought it was pretty shit. Shittily written characters, dull pacing and lackluster performances from what's her face and the other guy. Goodman was good but the other guy was not at all believable as an uneducated redneck.

Not quite a 7/10 flick for me

Also the last 30 seconds or so made me cringe hard.

10 Clovefiled Lane ARG keeps going...
>>
Emmet was a fucking moron.

>get caught making suit
>instead of giving Howard some innocuous excuse, makes up some weird lie about making a weapon
>get shot immediately, of course

why did he do this? I understand he couldn't tell the truth because then the suit would have been destroyed but how was this better? By that point he already knew that Howard probably killed that other girl and was obsessed with self preservation. he could have given him literally any other excuse and he probably wouldn't have gotten shot.
>>
>>67216438
I bet Dan Trachtenberg who directed Portal :No Escape is also a coincidence.
>>
>>67216339
I didnt, know. All I thought when I heard the title was "Somebody wants to be Santaolalla". Turns out it was Bear McReary who is actually quite good.
>>
>>67216481

Did anyone else think it was kind of weird that howard had kidnapped someone before? I thought it was out of place to include for some reason. but hey the main character needed a reason to escape right?
>>
>>67216620
Same. I was surprised to see the film was rated 12 too. Not showing things was much more affecting than showing it. "This next part is something you don't need to see" was a great line well delivered and had more impact than a gratuitous shot of it. I thought the shot they did show later on ruined it a bit.

There were just a few too many moments like that that spoilt things. It was never alluded to WHY he did it. That sort of thing needs explaining. His intentions may have been altruistic, but if he's that untrustworthy why bother in the first place?
>>
>>67216620
emmet actually said he was going for the gun, and I still somewhat forgot howard actually had the gun on him and then bam

>>
>>67216070
>>67216190
Can you faggots explain what any of this remotely has to do with half life?
>>
>>67216649
The original script had a more undefined portrait of Howard, but anyways the end the movie was about how monsters come in many forms.

Howard was a monster literally in the end.
>>
>>67216620
>well, I didn't think he could have expected Howard to straight up kill him.

He knew Howard had probably already kidnapped and killed a young girl. He also knew that Howard was willing to go to extreme lengths to protect himself. They were also having this conversation next to a giant drum filled with acid, which Howard had explicitly mentioned is great for melting fucking bodies.

honestly don't know how anyone didn't expect him to get shot after admitting to trying to steal the fucking crazy guy's gun so he could steal his waifu away. That was literally the worst possible thing he could have said. He might as well have said "Please shoot me in my big dumb face."

>>
>>67216016

It was amazing up until the ending.

I thought the ending betrayed what the entire rest of the movie was about. It should have been a cliff hanger ending with her dying at the end maybe with a very brief glimpse of the aliens or no glmpse.
>>
>>67216207
>>67216886
>still using spoilers
It's all up on Wikipedia now, faggots.
>>
FUN FACT: In the original script Howard ended up not being a murderer in the end. Whichs makes you realize that he may not have been a murderer at all.
>>
>>67217557
Sounds like the Room.
>>
John Goodman's character wasn't crazy. Well, he was a rapist/murderer, so obviously he was crazy in that sense, but he wasn't "alien space worms" crazy. He built that bunker for one reason: rape. The high-security, isolated location was the perfect place for him to commit his dirty deeds. But when anyone asked him why he was building a bunker, he would need a cover. Pretending to be crazy was that cover.
>>
>>67217665

In the original script he never actually murdered or raped that girl and she is really his daughter and becomes a much more sympathetic character.
>>
>>67217728
>>67217665
So no monster at the end? Why is call Cloverfield then?
>>
>>67217767

No, she escapes and howard follows her out and then he tells her his true story of how he lost his wife and daughter, she tells him he's leaving and he tells her to come back. She says no and he tells her to be careful, and she walks off to the city and its in complete ruins with ayy lmao and it cuts to her face and the movie ends.
>>
>>67217767

it turned out to be very entertaining, and along with that, the cinematography was great.
i thought the ending was pretty fun, although making Michelle have complete control of such an unbelievable scenario was quite odd. the overall direction of the acting wasn't spectacular either, with a lot of the dialogue sounding annoyingly awkward.
regardless, it was fun and, overall, pretty good.

Nikolia Roza a colleague of Howard at Bold Futura sends him an encoded message that can only be decoded using HAM rad technique (Slow Scan TV)

This most likely a ARG for the God Particle movie or Clovefield 3.
>>
It was very good. I almost wish there was more John Goodman, he did a great job by making a crazy doomsday prepper into a lowkey subtle character.

The ending was a bit much, probably could have just cut to the credits at some point when she left. With what they did instead, it totally clashed with the rest of the movie which was simple and grounded. Excited to see in the future if this and the original Cloverfield can connect in a third film.

I liked it a lot until the last 10 minutes or whatever when they injected a long ass action scene from a completely different movie.

There is literally nothing lost from the movie if they cut out the action scene and just show her driving away and turning after hearing the stuff on the radio.

I get that the movie is great but the last 15 minutes are completely another movie. But for me those 15 minutes are what makes me hype for another cloverfield movie.

This movie was garbage. It was painfully obvious where the original screenplay ended and where the studio said NAH YOU GOTTA PUT CGI AND FUCKING ALIENS IN IT THE MOVIE WON'T SELL OTHERWISE. 10 Cloverfield Lane originated from an "ultra low budget" spec script penned by John Campbell and Matt Stuecken, titled The Cellar.

Also it doesn't keep you fucking guessing because the dense motherfuckers decided to name it 'Cloverfield' even though it had nothing to do with the movie. Because they named it that you knew there would be a monster or something waiting for them upstairs.

What's fucking more is the shitty aliens both looked like something out of Half Life. Then when you realize Jew Jew Abrams is making a Half Life movie, and look at the other directing credit Trachtenberg has is a fucking Portal fan film, you realize the entire final act was just test footage for their shitty half life project.

Maybe 'The Cellar' would have been a good movie, but the garbage product we got was a totally unrelated screenplay, test footage for another fucking project, and a name from an entirely different franchise. It's hollywood jewary at its fucking worst.
>>
>>67220769

if it ended like that, all anyone would be talking about is the speculation about what it is and it would take away from the movie. Instead, we have a great movie presented in full with all questions answered. And thank god. I'm sick of movies that end with so many questions surrounding it.

She blinds him with bathroom cleaner, he tells her about his tragic life (dead wife, missing daughter, treacherous Nate, etc.), and then she shoots him in the kneecap and runs away. He ends the movie alive, entreating Michelle to “be careful.” Later, after traveling down empty roads and finding no one around to help her, she crests a hill and sees the Chicago skyline, smoldering and destroyed. No explanation is given. We don’t even know what she will do next, only that she now knows that Howard, for all his oddity, was correct. The final line in the script is, “She slowly pulls down the mask on the hazmat suit before taking a breath.”

Meh. I'm happier with the ending they decided on.

I interpreted the ending of the movie, the artistic character using their own ingenuity to defeat the big dumb CGI aliens to be some sort of wish fulfilment of the kino crowd defeating the kind of movies that usually have big dumb alien battles

I don't know, that's just how it came across to me
The ending's pacing felt off regardless, but I don't have a problem with the ending since it fit in the narrative I applied to the movie the whole time anyway
>>
>>67224159
>>67224212
Half-Life 3 and Portal 3 are one game. The game is Mr. Robot's son's father's cousin.
>>
>>67224085
Same. I would have quickly forgotten about it if it was just called The Cellar.
>>
i actually liked that they went with aliens in the end.
what i didn't like was that MEW's character kept her composure while looking at aliens for the first time in her life and actually did shit like sneaking around and making a molotov cocktail while throwing it accurately.
the ending would be better if she had seen the aliens, freaked out, ried to run away and eventually get killed by the aliens without much of a fight back.
>>
>>67224293
That ending would suck shit.
>>
>>67222387
a-any screengrabs of her pits senpai?
>>
>>67224234
interesting. in the ARG Howard tells Megan to go to the bomb shelter he built under her grandmother's house in Chicago.
>>
>>67224293
>>67224293
By defeating the alien she completes her arc and stop running from her past and try to handle them face on.

Howard was the monster a metaphor for her father.
>>
How do you get your Asylum-tier spec script associated completely falsely with a major movie made years earlier? Why would Abrams do that to his own shit?
>>
>>67224244
Except nothing in the film actually indicated that, you're just making shit up because you're a hipster wanker.
>>
>>67224293

I was pretty upset that she was able to kill it with a fucking molotov.

I mean, it's not nearly the same level of bullshit as Signs "let's invade a planet made almost entirely out of a substance that is deadly acid to us without any form of protection" bullshit, but it's still pretty goddamn dumb.

>what i didn't like was that MEW's character kept her composure while looking at aliens for the first time in her life

Considering she had just escaped a psycho by dumping a barrel of acid at him and crawling through the ventilation before freezing and smashing a lock while the bunker was on fire, I'd chalk her being hopped up on adrenaline and expecting the environment to be extremely hostile above ground to her not running. Her fight or flight instinct was already in fight mode.
>>
>>67224565
Wasn't it briefly established that the gas released by the ship is flammable? That's why I bought the molotov blowing it up.
>>
>>67224605
that is correct! 10 point Cinema Sins!
>>
>>67224605
when is that established?
>>
>>67224652
When you see the gas blowing up by the fire left in the bunker.
>>
>>67224652
I thought there was a fireball that was produced when the gas came into contact with the fire that was already burning from the bunker blowing up.
>>
>>67224605

I don't remember that.

Doesn't make it any less stupid. It might actually make it more stupid. How the hell are humans going to get blown the fuck out by aliens that you can make explode by shooting bottle rockets at?
>>
>>67224677
Otherwise Michelle would be killed by the gas because the dog thing ate her gas mask.
>>
>>67224674
>>67224677
the gas doesn't make an appearance until the alien combine ship hovers right above her. the bunker explodes because before she exits the hatch there's literally a close up of a sign that says "EXPLOSIVE"
>>
>>67224715
Is phase 2 like Howard said. Those aliens only purpose is to eradicate what is left of the human population.
>>
>>67216649
I thought that it was that howard kidnapped people before and him "accidentaly" crashing into michelles car was just another kidnapping, just this time the end of the world happened at the same time
>>
>>67224757
True but there are still flames coming from the entrance to the bunker. I've only seen the movie once but I'm pretty sure there's a big fireball when the gas comes into contact with the flames.
>>
>>67224757
Yes. But the gas from the combine ship was effective until comes in contact with the fire left from the explosion in the bunker.
>>
>>67224790
only once before with the girl he killed. It's a classic substitute-daughter kidnapping that's more fleshed out in the ARG.

>>67224832
there is no alien gas at that point in the movie. the alien gas is green and comes directly from the mothership which wasn't anywhere near the house at that point. The explosion is what tips off the ship to her presence.
>>
>>67224761
Perfect ADD.

10/10

Meta as fuck!
>>
>>67224898
You're definitely remembering the scene wrong. The ship hovers directly over her just outside the farmhouse where the entrance to the bunker is and releases the gas.

can't tell if bait, but just in case it isn't, the timeline is:

close up of sign that says things are going to explode
she escapes
she takes off her hazmat suit to show that there is in fact no harmful gas
she sees the alien ship
the bunker explodes
the ship releases aliens that chase her
they run away when the alien ship finds her
it releases the gas, which she then puts the hazmat suit back on for
the aliens remove the suit, showing that the gas doesn't linger for long
she BTFOs the ship.

simple.
>>

fixe'd
>>
>>67225043
let's be real that movie had problems too.

I love JK Simmons, Jazz, and it deserved the oscars for editing, but the story was predictable AF. GOAT ending tho
>>
>>67225117
okay but no.
>>
>>67225148
why?
>>
>>67225148
She can't use the lighter if the gas were present in the area. I don't get your point.
>>
>>67225233
that's what I'm saying. I'm saying there is no gas for the majority of the movie. it only appears when the alien ship releases it and that's it.
>>
>>67225268
That's true the gas in only concentrated in areas where the ship spray. Otherwise the world would be burning by now.
>>
>>67225117
I thought the alien critters were just part of the (new) local wildlife, attracted by the car alarm
>>
>>67216742
It's pretty fucking clear why he did it mate, maybe you should pay more attention.
>>
>>67225117
This is correct.
>>
>>67225456
nope.
>>
>>67225471
Then what happened to the gas when the car gets picked up? She had lost the mask at that point. The gas inside the ship is flammable which is why a single molotov did so much damage.
>>
>>67225393
there are aliens which I don't think they are in the same "team" based in HL

First the ship is attracted by the explosion from the bunker no the car alarm. Second the dos thing aliens seems to be attracted by sound nothing else if you watch carefully. Also the dog thing is afraid of the ship maybe because the gas is also effective to aliens.
>>
Just saw this movie and thought the ending was so bad that I'm movie hopping right now. Goodman was fickin grade A though!
>>
>>67225518
she puts the mask back on just in time when it gets released. it gets taken off pretty quickly afterwards by the alien so it's clear it doesn't stick around.

The ship explodes because she hits its weak spot/entry to the core, like in Independence Day or Star Wars
>>
Did anyone else catch the Portal Stomrs at the end of the movie?
>>

Howard said that a lot of interference came from the satellites but no space. He didn't know if it was Russians or martians.

Also the ARG is presenting the idea that Bold Futura knew about the event. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HOVHoxZE0I
>>
>>67227031
Ok so the ARG knows too. Howard could have easily have known considering he went to the lengths of finding some fresh meat whilw the event happens. No portal dimension shit. Just shitty skyline tier cgi aliums, anything else would be a coincidence.
>>
>>67227271
Howard was prepare for anything that's the point. For what exactly is not sure, we can only guess by the clues. Howard don't gives a fuck about what happen to the world he just wanted to be save with her "daughter" Megan.

The point of the movie is that monsters comes in many forms. Howard was the monster not the aliens or whatever.
>>
>>67224293
I didn't mind showing the aliens or the ships but the fucking IN YO FACE EXTREME ALIEN ACTION SEQUENCE HERE felt really out of place.

It kept making me think of old Bill Hicks stand up when he would promise that if everyone sat through the boring parts of his show he would end it with five minutes of dick jokes to pander to the lowest common denominator.

I would've been happier with a low key ambiguous ending like having MEW decide to go to Houston after hearing a broadcast and then just a silhouette or two behind the clouds with the lightning.

Instead they tried to turn her into Ellen Ripley's great grandmother and have her drive to Texas, presumably to find a liquor store so she can take down the whole god damned invasion fleet by herself.
>>
>>67227271
>No portal dimension shit. Just shitty skyline tier cgi aliums, anything else would be a coincidence

i needed the end to happen, or at the very least to see if the aliens actually sprayed the gas. i wanted to know if the woman that died outside the shelter was actually a victim of the aliens and not involved in goodmans twisted kidnapping.
>>
why didnt they just end the movie with her escaping?

they could even end it with her seeing the alien invasion if they wanted to plug a sequel

or have it be that nothing was wrong and howard was just crazy

why the oh muh gurd action sequence?
>>
>>67226720
Congratulations, you came up with a less believable but at least less threatening lie with all the time in the world and without a guy you think is a murderer standing two feet from you, with a barrel of acid close at hand.
>>
>>67228014
My guess is that she was Howard's wife that knew about the shelter.
>>
>>67228147
And yet you came up with nothing. Its all about how you sell it which I could with mine. To be frank they should have had a plan for that very likely outcome of Howard finding out or at the very least RETURNED THE SCISSORS when they aren't using them

>>
Anyone read the novel "Wool"

>>
>>67228321
The point was that while Emmet's story was stupid, yes, he was under very stressful circumstances, and it's basically pointless to sit at your computer comfortable and safe and come up with things he could have said instead. I understand that it's frustrating that he made the excuse he did, but in the context of the movie it is very understandable that he would come up with a godawful one.
>>
>>67228405
Apparently, so lay it on me. Aside from the obvious point that they could have easily killed Howard at any point during the movie when he's eating or watching a movie and just lived there in peace forever
>>
>>67227700
Howard wanted some fine pussy because hes a lonely satellite tech that knows aliens are coming and he'll be in his /pol/ rapeshed for quite a while. However things go wrong when the producers of the movie decided they couldnt afford that audi r8 they wanted so they decided to stick the name cloverfield and add some post processing to give the illusion that you're watching a connected film instead of a college film student tier film made by jews so they could steal your 5 sheckles.

I got you famalamadingdong. Which is true that in the moment tension and stress who knows how any of us would act (probably break down crying and attack in the hopes of at least getting shot as to not have my face dunked in acid) but like I said before they should have had a plan for that moment. Or been sneakier and not lazily left out supplies
>>
>>67228616
Howard was looking for an excuse to kill emmet at that point.
>>
>>67216016
I saw it just yesterday. I'll be honest, I was expecting it to be a sequel or pre-quell to the original Cloverfield movie with the big Cloverfield monster in it for some reason but I was disappointed. Not disappointed in the movie though. It was actually a decent suspense movie. I found myself predicting things throughout the movie and at times my predictions were right but most of the time the movie managed to make my predictions wrong. The ending for me was a bit queer. The girl encountering an alien and and it's ship and surviving both encounters and blowing up the ship to boot? Extremely unlikely. It would have been better if they would have just left aliens out of the whole movie and made it all seem like just an elaborate plan a phsycho made up for his own sick pleasure. But all things considered, it wasn't a bad movie. I would give a 7/10 but I wouldn't watch it again
>>
>>67228616

>like I said before they should have had a plan for that moment

maybe, but sometimes ppl don't plan for everything. it's not even a stretch of the imagination to consider it.
>>
>>67228599
They barely even show them. Its pitch black and all close ups. For the small ones imagine those worms from king Kong as the head and a slug with legs body/some just slugs; all black. The ships were alive and had a two way opening mouth/beak thing that could swallow a van easily. Probably the coolest looking alien thing. The ships could change their fin things (which you'd just have to see to understand) when moving.

>>
>>67216893
Not that dude you asked but there's plenty of points.

Director is a valve fanboy and got his job by making a portal fan film.

The idea of the combine is expressed in the aliens of cloverfield, in that they are alien machine hybrids. The first alien we see for example is pretty much a houndeye + a stalker from the game series. The flying craft as shown >>67216231 is pretty much the same idea again, with greater armour. Which if someone did a Seven Hour War movie, you would probably see armoured versions. Half Life 2 takes place in a time where the aliens have "won" so we see a less militarised force.

JJ Abrams has also put plenty of valve stuff into his media, even have an interactive trailer for super 8 in one of their games. Take the observers in Fringe for example, also the initial showing of Jack's dad in LOST was pretty much the G-Man.

Saying that something JJ or Trachtenberg does has huge valve influence is like being a holocaust denier.
