if you really think your "entertainment medium" for escaping reality is superior or different from another then you have to realize on every side of the spectrum lies the same deadbeat losers that waste too much time and successful individuals that take the entertainment in small doses. it's escapism. whether you cry yourself to sleep and watch movies or cry yourself to sleep and play video games it doesn't matter
>>
>>67206880
I started playing again rolling an Agent and the story is actually quite compelling. You can tell it was a unique archetype that they could throw some great story telling into since nothing was established. Conspiracies, backstabbing, paranoia, and bedding a girl on very planet is a blast.

Every other class already had "lore" that weighed it down sometimes. Not to mention any of the Republic class stories MUST reference the movies every 10 minutes.
>>
>>67206923

>>67206994
Real art isn't for escaping reality though. It's for expressing it. I even like video games but they're inferior and less mature then film, literature, music, painting, etc. Maybe someday there'll be a vidya auteur who changes that but it hasn't happened yet

Leaving aside the fact that clearly art can be as escapist as all hell... I somewhat agree.

Not there haven't been a few valiant attempts:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7VJ4lP-05A

...and there are a lot of games these days that are really just slightly interactive movies - though I feel that's a bit of a cop out.

But in the long run, vidya offers a medium that movies can't - an *interactive* experience, and there's potential for something so unique and radical to be born there, that it may one day be the new genre that lays waste to near all other forms of storytelling through media.

Meanwhile, we just have a few stabs at the curtain between us and that future, and a few good cinematic moments in video games:

>Kotor 2
>A conclusion
Maybe it's been a while since you played them, but the entire point of Kotor 2 was to set up the Kotor 3 that never happened.
Between constant hints of Revan assembling the Empire to stop something dark beyond the edge of the galaxy, HK-47 (originally) creating a robot clone army of himself Kreia intending to turn Malachor V into a beacon of the Dark Side for the sake of signalling "someoone or something" as stated by what's her face's sith holocrons, the Jedi Order's apparent extinction, Goto's plans being crumbled about salvaging the Republic, the entire Galaxy's criminal underworld falling into complete chaos and the fact that the Exile is a still present walking talking hole in the Force and as such in the universe itself, there is nothing in Kotor 2 that would resemble a conclusion to anything.

I don't think that's possible to do by just extending 2 a little bit.

There's so much shit going down, that it would need a whole separate movie to even begin setting straight some oft the stuff 2 did.

There is no Jedi Council, the Republic is collapsing into independent planets, there is a Hutt war incoming, and on top of that something worse than the galaxy saw in the past few centuries is brewing on the edge of the galaxy.
Those things alone could fill 2 movies, and that's still not mentioning how the Mandalorians were re-organizing in the middle of this, how Kreia explained that as long as the Exile lives, he/she will draw people to follow him/her, and also cause constant turmoil by the nature of what the Exile is.

This is not the kind of stuff you can shove in there in half a movie, or just one movie.

The thing about the video games =/= art argument is that it's about categorization. I really like Roger Ebert's explanation - it's not that video games can't have artistic elements, it's that the function of art and the function of a game are distinct. To approach the artistic elements of a game as art in itself requires you to lift them out of the gaming context - a beautifully rendered image from a game or story developments in a game are not elements of the game as a purpose-driven exercise. A chess piece can be a beautiful sculpture, but chess isn't art. When a video game is made in a way to be experienced rather than played, it stops meeting the criteria for a game.
>>
>>67208522
>When a video game is made in a way to be experienced rather than played, it stops meeting the criteria for a game.
Well then a whole lotta vidya being sold as game has already left the genre.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVicEudmmA4

While video games being sold solely as experiences still make up a tiny niche of the market, from those experiments, eventually, will rise the new form of artistic storytelling, one based on immersion and interaction, where the viewer becomes part of the story.

It may be sometime before we see that full conversion, but by your own definition, there's already a whole lotta games that are art (albeit, more than I'd give the name to with my own definition.)
>>

>>
>>67208666

Well that's not counter to the argument, the argument is that any video game that is designed to be played fills a gaming role and a video game that isn't meant to be played isn't really a game. It can be an interactive art installation but it's a "game" in name only by virtue of the medium.

Meh, /tv/ has it's own bananas now. Interesting...

Given at how effective that was at ending YLYL threads for all time (ie. not at all), and as the same can be said for Spiderman and Wincest threads... I do wonder why people keep trying...

Especially since they've now blown all their time setting up this script (and, yes, I'm being optimistic, as I'm sure a human has dedicated himself to this task fully), rather than just ignoring the thread, and moving onto something they enjoy, they find it more important to spend the rest of their day proving they don't like "X".

It's a strange phenomenon, really.

There's nothing convoluted from it.

I thought it was straight-forward - control the people by controlling the context of every last thing around them. It basically amounts to mind control on a mass scale. And it's something actually being used by the left right now.

I was actually talking about the importance of the "lucky" girl, the vampire, the roller skating demolitions expert, and the diffusing bomber with a limp.

You know, because any semi-competent story has all the elements relate back to the central theme of the game. And isn't a jumbled mess of fan fiction type bullshit, not relating the core message of the film overall.

>all these fa/tv/irgins so scared by the stigma associated with vidya that you fail to see it can be a method of storytelling that has its own perks and benefits

Some other anon said this a while ago, but RDR would make a good two parter movie. Have the first part end when John is summoned to Blackwater by the Federal agents.

Best part of the movie would probably be in Mexico.

Also, John Goodman as Drew MacFarlane.

MGS2 is great, but it cannot be anything other than a videogame. It's whole story is bound up and intimately linked to the fact that it's a game, and not just that, but the fact that it's a another popular game's sequel.

I fail to see how it could be translated to film without having to alter a great deal of the story and dialogue.

I take it back, 1 is the most self contained, but Kojima didn't really expect people to be too interested in the story, which is why so much shit got switched/retconned/altered in the sequels. Snake Eater is the most fleshed out though, and if there ever were to be a MGS movie series, Snake Eater should be the first one.

I think the problem with a RDR movie would be the same as with a GTA movie. The devs are big fans of westerns and crime films. They use so many cues and references from those, it'd end up being a collection of callbacks to other better movies. It just simply wouldn't work.
Didn't RDR also use a bunch of licensed songs from westerns? I know there was some morricone in there.

I think GTA IV could work quite well as a movie or series. The biggest problem with making these games into movies is that the actual plot and story is so far removed from what you actually do in the game, like shooting random people and stealing cars left and right. You can't make it Rampage and you can't make it this lame straight faced story either. Either way somethings gonna be missing and you can't have both if you want it to make any sort of sense

Ebert was a retard. Games are objectively art. The real problem is people making the mistake of thinking that if something is art it's implicitly good and deep and meaningful.

Are you saying nobody is smart? That nobody enjoys art? I like video games and I live entertaining movies. I think that some of the best movies ever made are the best because of how technically proficient they are at being entertaining. This is why Fury Road is an amazing film. I also think that the best of the best is stuff that isn't superficially fun but expressing the entire depth of human emotion and experience. Shit like Tarkovsky, Tchaikovsky, Hemingway, etc aren't entertaining superficially but they're great art because of what they accomplish and express. That makes them worthy and desirable to experience because there is a fulfillment other than postponing boredom.

Yeah, I have. Good game, but there's nothing special about the story or its writing.
>>implying most movies aren't based off of books
It's not an issue of adaptation. It's an issue of video games taking tropes and cliches from films and implementing them in mediocre writing because the people making it don't know any better. It creates a story that feels like a hollow imitation.
Also, there are thousands upon thousands of original movies, anon, and plenty of them are great.

There's a difference between a direct adaption of a book and something claiming to be an original story that's just loosely based off popular movies.
>>

Probably, it had some good characters and most of its problems came from bad gameplay choices and terrible mission selection. Niko felt a bit too whiny at times, though.
