The film does not make it out to entirely be Tom's fault. Both parties are at fault, but JGL is not wrong at all: Tom is unambitious despite having a STRONG interest in architecture. He's a greeting card writer for fuck's sake, Summer and he himself both know that's not what he wants. One of the things to take from the movie is to get your OWN shit together before you decide to look for someone to fuck on the regular. Learning to love yourself and all that shit.

I didn't think she was a cunt, I think she's presented that way because we are looking at the guy's perspective of the situation, but in reality she didn't do much wrong. From the way I understood it, she just wanted to have an enjoyable, relaxed relationship with no expectations, but he always thought of it as more than that even though she told him she didn't to be in a traditional couple relationship. She knew that he expected more from their relationship, and that is what turned her off. She didn't want a stressful relationship with expectations, she just wanted to live in the moment and have somebody to share those moments with. She fell in love with a different guy because he wasn't clingy and he just shared the moments with her instead of worrying about what to call them. She wasn't really leading the guy on, he just had unrealistic expectations for their relationship and didn't understand her feelings.

By letting jgl go she's also given him a chance to find a true connection.
