Why do critics hate comedy?

Most comedies get panned, and even legitimately great movies (The Informant!) get knocked for daring to have humour, even if the humour completely works in the movie.

critics love coen brothers

A critic's career is based on their ability to parrot mainstream opinion.

Mainstream opinion gravitates positively toward familiarity. (For example : Instagram and Facebook memes)

A good comedy is surprising, original, tells jokes that haven't been already told, etc. - differs from what is familiar.

So critics pan comedies because they are unique and differ from the mainstream.

This is why movies like train wreck and other Judd Apatow shit get good reviews. They recycle old jokes and tread familiar territory.

wait are we talking about newspaper/clickbait "critics" or actual respectable critics?

Both -

Armond White is one of the only good critics I know by name - other critics shit all over him for going against popular opinion.

Respectable critics died with Ebert.

Now they just make pandering statements to get clicks on their websites and thus, money.

Glib Facsimile.

>that pic
Is that to show how many people are releasing garbage/unoriginal crap they've already done before?

How is he good? He's good for a laugh because of his ridiculous prose and pure contrarian nature (Transformers one got a bad review from him, and then the rest got Film of the year from him basically, exactly opposite of virtually everyone else).
>>67095255
Is that the same guy that panned Carpenter's The Thing for being too horrifying for a horror movie?
>>
>>67095392

He's not pure contrarian. If you look at his rotten tomatoes profile you'll see his opinion matches that of the average review about 50% of the time.

while I don't always agree with his opinion he's one of the only critics that can form a logical argument and back it up with concrete examples.

Yes.

"Respectable critics" are a meme all on their own.

Their followers just like what they write/say. It's not about agreeable opinion. It reaches a person's "need" to discuss a movie with a friend.
>>
Critics love stuff like Woody Allen and Wes Anderson. And they like dark humor. Most comedy is really cliche and cheap jokes.
>>
>its your job to watch every movie
>this means every comedy
>this means every time you have to watch a comedy, you'll think of all the insufferable dogshit you've had to watch
>the movie then has the almost impossible task of making you forget about all the dogshit you've watched.

Also calling the informant a comedy is pretty misleading/wrong. As it was pretty much a straight retelling of that guy's life.

The Informant! Was pretty dark comedy too, and that got knocked down a bit for it.
>>

comedy kinda implies the situations were created or exaggerated for comedic effect.

Nothing about Mark Whitacre's life was exaggerated for comedic effect and everything in the movie actually happened.

But anon, Zizek is still around.
>>
>>67096623
Why does comedy have to imply that?
The film definitely has a dark humor vibe to it, even if it is 100% true that doesn't mean it can't have any humor in it, dark or otherwise.
