McPoyle's vs Ponderosa is the best episode of this season by a country mile because it feels like the older episodes where the cast are just morons unaware of how society works.

No, it hasn't. Basically all the most memorable moments come from them being irredeemably fucked up degenerates.
The early season "normal" episodes about cliche shit like the abortion debate were absolute snoozefests, and the best early season episodes anticipated how shitty they'd become like the crack episode.
If they weren't getting worse, there'd be no progression at all, and that definitely wouldn't be a better show.
