Scamming greedy stupid people doesn't make you the bad guy.
>>
get the ludes
>>
The system's broken and we might as well have as much fun embracing the hedonism as we can
>>
No matter how many boundaries you trespass, in the end we're all gonna make it brah.
>>
If you're going to fuck people over you might as well go all out because rich people get off easy.
>>
There is no moral. Its the same movie as goodfellas. Scorcese just likes telling stories about larger than life characters who live way way outside the norm.
>>
>>66869734
Goodfellas nearly won an oscar so time to try that shit again I guess.
>>
>>66869734

We have a broken system and it's human nature to exploit that.
>>
>>66869734

That Scorsese can make a good movie out of anything, really.
>>
There is literally nothing wrong with fucking your cousin.
>>
>>66869878
I think on some level he thinks he's satirizing masculinity. The trouble is he can't help making the men in his films seem at worst like tragic heroes, and a lot of the time like winners who don't play by the rules.

When he doesn't stick to that formula he makes films like The Last Temptation Of Christ which most Scorsese fans don't really reference among his movies.
>>
>>66869734
There was none and that's the point.
Not every examination of greed/capitalism needs to be preachy and moralizing.
>>
>>66869734
Shouting and squinting REALLY won't get you an Oscar even if you do it for the ninth time
>>
it was stupid when they remade it and called it The Big Short. Fucking stupid oscarbait movie.
>>
people will eat up any shit Scorcese poops out
>>
rich people are evil and degenerates
>>
>>66869734
I'm pretty sure it was something along the lines that,
even though we're so quick to condemn Belfort's actions and those of big bankers, in the same situation we'd all act the same despite knowing how wrong it is

That and the system's broken because white collar crime doesn't -seem- that bad up close
>>
>>66869734
Jews are bad.
>>
>>66869734
There's no moral, it's just some guys life which was particularly interesting and exciting and would make a good movie.

There are plenty of better people than that guy to make movies about with morals to their stories, but they don't sell well.
>>
>>66869973
Agree with this. Sort of like how they say there's no such thing as an anti-war movie because every war movie glorifies war.

Maybe you can't make a fun or interesting movie about people who break the social contract and also criticize them without being a huge downer.
>>
There isn't one. Literally any of us would do the same.

there are a lot of stupid people in this thread

the movie is an indictment of the North American obsession with wealth which subsumes any consideration of morality in favour of the exploitation of whoever it takes to serve our own means which are ultimately worthless and only lead to us becoming soulless

the movie makes some of the hedonism look appealing, though in retrospect it is appalling, in order to have the audience feel at once drawn to these disgusting human beings only to eventually see how repulsive they truly are

it's a pretty brilliant satire really.
>>
>>66873638

the complete obsession with wealth to the point that it informs every aspect of status is actually a North American thing mate. sorry to be the one to break the news to you. the situation is obviously worsening in Europe but nowhere is it as overwhelming as it is in North America. why do you think Scorsese set it in North America you thick fuck.

this movie tried so hard to convince the audience about how edgy it was.

>hey look people fucking on the workplace!! ahah duuuude edgy as fuck!!!
>bro drugs!! ahah omg the ppl in this movie are like, so crazy bro
>duuude that dude is eating a fish!1 ahha omg bro crazy as fuck!

every "edgy" scene was so overglorified and try-hard it ruined the whole movie. the red fish scene in particular was pure cringe. yeah we got it, they were completely crazy, bro.

Anyway I know he is well aware of what he's putting on screen. But he never criticizes his characters. He just wants to make movies about criminals who live outside the rules. Which ends up being a tacit endorsement.

>>
>>66874479

the entire purpose of satire is that it is meant to be subtle. it's obvious that the average person is fairly stupid and likely missed the point of the movie. the entire point is that these things look seductive to us on screen because we share in the repulsive yearning for wealth that the characters exhibit. the movie is so amazing because it actually is something of a condemnation of the audience watching it.

plebs didn't understand due to stupidity

it's people like you that make this movie feel relevant and necessary

I'm hoping you were trolling but there are a lot of people that comment on the youtube clips from the movie about how amazing Belfort is and what a role model he is, which I find depressing as fuck
>>
>>66869734
The moral is that even though he's a criminal and has fucked people over, we all want to be like him and so do the people he talks to at the end of the film. He's basically exposing humans as being hedonistic first.
>>
>>66876238

If Scorsese hadn't got bronchitis he would have stayed a cokehead. He never moved beyond hedonism psychologically. So all this stream of his work (Goodfellas, Casino) is about how great irresponsibility feels, and what a drag it is to grow up.
>>
Once again Scorsese has one of the top films of the decade so far. And something even better may be coming.
>>
>>66869734

It means that Wall Street is greedy.

That the general public does not care about specifics, only glorification/the promise of reward. As long as you think there will be retribution, you will justify anything. This is how Jordan and his crook buddies made billions from unsuspecting idiots, because those idiots trusted Jordan & co. to make them rich. It is also how Scorsese could make arguably the most shamelessly vulgar and hedonistic mainstream film to date because all the people get what's coming to them in the end.

>>66877240
Right now I'm unable to decide what's funnier, if your pathetic interpretations of what things 'mean' on films, or the deluded belief that you're practicing or fostering quality discussion about movies on /tv/. Either way, comedy.
>>
The biggest thing that sticks out to me about this movie is that Belfort has some virtuous qualities: he's very driven and persistent and he's very loyal to a lot of the people in his life. However, all of it is in the service of business practices that aren't very virtuous. For me the central scene is when Belfort is about to quit but then he tells his staff he just can't give up. I'd say the moral is that while America has made salesmanship, boldness, persistence, and confidence into cardinal virtues, we tend to lose sight of the fact that treating people well and leaving them better off than we found them is the most important virtue of all.
>>
I thought it was fairly obvious: corruption is enticing.

Throughout the movie, all the characters seem nice and funny and like overall pretty good people. Yeah, sure there are some bumps on the road, and they certainly live it up, butt he way Scorcese frames it, he makes the drugs and the hookers and the money and the bribery and the illegality seem alluring and--more importantly--normal. He tells the story from the very beginning, which also helps, as we see Belfort and his pals in a very down-to-earth light. We see their humble roots as salesmen, drunks, friends, telemarketers, etc.

The hedonism also is given no real impact towards the beginning,. It's seen as an everyday thing for these men, and a no-downsides atmosphere. Even when that one guy gets busted for drug possession, it gets played off as a minor thing, and is quickly passed over. All of this makes it easier for the viewer to pallet this lifestyle.

So, even if the viewer walks into the movie expecting to be outraged, as my quite morally conservative mother did, they mostly walk out confused by why they are enamored, or at least dazzled, with such a degenerate lifestyle. That's the theme, imo: that most people put into Belfort's situation would have done exactly the same thing, and that everyone, no matter how moral they claim to be, finds his lifestyle seductive.

The slippery slope of corporate greed is just too subtle and too easy to fall into, and once you notice you're going too fast fast, it's too hard to stop.
