I always considered Mario to be the Mickey Mouse of video games, so clean cut and always nice, even more so with the new castrato voice they gave him
To that end, I consider Sonic to be the Bugs Bunny of video games, an edgier less gentle version of Mario/Mickey, and in some ways better but never as iconic.

There's one in Tokyo but it's not owned by Disney,; it's owned by the Oriental Land Company. Disney entered a contract with them in the early '80s when Disney wasn't making any money. Basically, Tokyo Disneyland is a big amusement park full of Disney characters but none of its money goes towards the company.
And there will soon be two more in the Chinese area: One's been in Hong Kong since 2005, and another is opening in Shanghai soon
