reminds me of another masterpiece called Caligula

Only Matthew was good in it

why yes, I agree, only deep philosophical are good

While not up to par visually with classic Scorsese, it's pretty good. Certainly better than his phony return to form (the Departed) and his dreary Oscar bait (the Aviator).

I thought it was garbage.
I was honestly suprised when I caught on to the fact that people actually liked it.
I guess I missed the point.

You just suck at art, broseph.

it isn't martys best but it's really good.

something about this movie and the social network really sum up our (millennials) aspirations, desires, and drive.

way too long. Though funny to hear women gasp in shock in the theatre.

No they don't.
>>
>>66737534
it's a satire. think of it in the same way as American Psycho but a bit more subtle. depiction of greed isn't necessarily an endorsement of it. probably one of the most anti-capitalist films if you think of it in that sense.
>>
>>66737626

can't think of any other film that really shows our apathetic nature and selfish desires?

???

It felt like Fear and Loathing while having a completely different message and story. A good "fucked up on drugs" movie.
>>
>>66737660
Plus these movies were projected onto a screen. So much projecting.
>>
>>66737297
Martin Scorcese is boring.

As a critique of capitalism, Wolf of Wall Street is pretty limp, and it's a pretty worn out punching bag to begin with. I see the film more as a character study. Or the study of a lack of character.
>>
>>66737534
>anti capitalist
Wut no not really
If it did have an anti capitalist message it would only be by extension because belfort is a salesman through and through
>>
>>66737660
Wolf on Wall Street was based of a generation x guy and could easily apply to baby boomers too.

That Scorsese can't direct a bad movie, even when he tries. Even when he keeps hiring a terrible actor like Leonardo. Also probably the only good role Jonah Hill will ever get in his shitty life.
>>
>>66737995
Yeah but didn't you see how apathetic the characters were and how driven they were by selfish desires? Clearly it's about millenials.

Too long, too gratuitous, and too edgy. I think the boat trip in the storm was where it lost any sense of purpose or direction. It was amusingly decadent, but it almost felt like a series of skits, and could've benefited from some ruthless editing, but hey, it's Scorsese, so that wasn't gonna happen.

It wasn't bad, but it wasn't as good as it could have been

Disgustingly whitewashed. A whole bunch of characters were white instead of their actual ethnicity, which is a really big fucking issue when the movie is based on real people.
>>
>>66737297
Honestly fucking loved the movie, have seen it multiple times. But holy fuck watching it on Christmas Day, opening weekend with my mom and my sister was the most fucking awkward movie I ever watched. Was much better watching it again without my mom, my sister wasn't the problem.
>>
>>66738470
Are you saying you had sex with your sister?
>>
it ran out of steam after a while, its biggest weakness is really that it was too damn long

Did you stop watching after the opening shot?

Made me realise that if Goodfellas came out today, /tv/ would be calling it overrated meme shit for Reddit.

It is, but that's not the point.

we haven't inherited those traits from our parents? you do understand how genealogy and history works, right? lrn into sisyphus

I don't think any film has really depicted the excessive nature of capitalism in such a degree. we understand the idea that these characters are having fun at other peoples expense. why would these characters ever feel guilt about problems they don't see or understand. a depiction is not an endorsement.
>>
>>66738518
Far from, I'm saying I'm more comfortable watching shit like that for her for three reasons. For one, she's not my fucking mother, that's the most obvious one I don't want to see chicks getting fucked every 5 minutes when I'm watching a movie with my mom. For two she liked the movie, she went to art school she knows how to look at a movie as a whole and not just say "oh this one thing happened so the whole movie is fucking shit."
>inb4 she's a stupid cunt that won't do anything with that arts degree
She dropped out to go to work because she was smart enough to realize it wouldn't get her anywhere in life.
And 3 it's not like she fucking 10-15 years older than me, I grew up with her. I'd feel comfortable watching anything short of porn with her.

>>
>>66738797
OK. I'll refute your central point because I understand logical fallacies too, dude :^)

I don't think it really works as a character study. Belfort isn't really that dynamic of a character. He always wanted to be rich, and got exactly what he asked for. If that was the movie we'd be looking at Goodfellas 2.

I personally believe Marty wanted to capture the idea that capitalism's excessive nature is actually really fun. That perhaps the problem isn't necessarily with capitalism but in our idea of what fun actually is, and maybe at what cost it comes with.

>I don't think it really works as a character study. Belfort isn't really that dynamic of a character.
That was my joke. I said the film was the study of a lack of character.
> If that was the movie we'd be looking at Goodfellas 2.
That's sort of what it is.
>I personally believe Marty wanted to capture the idea that capitalism's excessive nature is actually really fun. That perhaps the problem isn't necessarily with capitalism but in our idea of what fun actually is, and maybe at what cost it comes with.
I agree, but feel no need to attach it to capitalism. I'm sure Marty was trying to make a stab at the times with a relevant message, but it's not sophisticated enough to be interesting, so I'll stick with approaching the film on a more basic level.
>>
>>66738730
But capitalism is just incidental to those character flaws, or perhaps at most allow them to be expressed with little consequence
The plot is basically a bunch of guys taking it way too far and having it fall on them
>>
>>66739032
Literally the second word in my first post was "fucking" if you're gonna shit post do it right and point it out the first time.
>>
>>66737297
I really liked it.

/tv/ hates it to be contrarian of course.
