You are missing one vitally important aspect to this. The character Gillian Jacobs plays is a turbo slut as well as an alcoholic and habitually drug user. She may seem decently attractive, but the truth is her character is scrapping the bottom of the barrel. The only person in the world she could get is this ugly man who has no good friends to tell him to steer clear of a trainwrecked human being.
This is as realistic a look at character relations that you're likely to get in modern media.

I actually really enjoyed this show to be honest. It was kind of hard to separate Mickey from Britta sometimes because I could imagine Britta exactly like this in an extreme circumstance.
Anyway, I thought the comedy was good. I liked that they'd do something sort of off the wall, and acknowledge that it was sort of unfunny. Honestly just made it funnier because I knew that they weren't being serious.
If you strip everything else out though, I could have literally just watched this for Gus' experience working on a TV show. I thought that was interesting even if everybody there was a fucking asshole except for his black friend and the qt teenager who he had to tutor.
