New-fans don't get this though. They marathoned the show once and so the last few seasons are the ones fresh on their mind, with the characters having become full caricatures of themselves and everything turned into extremes. People like to point to the tranny and say "bb-b-bb-but he's gay" but seemingly forget he was never into her dick, the only reason he liked her was because of the attention.
There's a line about this in season 1, it's directed at Dennis but it applies to Mac way better.
"You're not gay, you're just really really vain"
This is Mac. That coupled with him being a loveless child that never got any attention from his parents. That's why he went with the tranny, THAT WAS THE WHOLE JOKE AND IT GOES OVER EVERYONES HEAD.
People also conveniently ignore all of his attempts to get laid with chicks in the first 6 seasons, many being successful ones. Him being into Rex is an example many people like to use to point out how gay he is, but it seems like they forget that his main goal in that episode was getting laid with the female models, and he succeeded in that and had a threesome. But this is completely ignored because it breaks the "canon" that Mac is gay, as set up by the later seasons. It's sad to cling to that as a defining characteristic when it was basically birthed out of horribly lazy writing, what was once a nuanced way to depict vanity and a desperate search for attention turned into: "CONSERVATIVE CLOSETED MAN" where the jokes are literally the same thing over and over and over again.
I fucking hope Mac coming out as gay sticks into season 12, that would be so much better than what we've been getting the last few seasons.
