I think it's quite clear that the machines in the Matrix are very petty. Not just from the way the one at the end of Revolutions acts when Neo tells it that it needs help from a human, but also when you think about the way they've kept humans enslaved for centuries. They're technologically advanced and they have no need for a terrestrial environment. They could very easily leave Earth behind and live somewhere else, but they stay and they keep humans in thrall because they get off on having total domination over their former masters.
