I've been using Harmy's Despecialized for a long time, and I have to say this is way fucking better.

There are changes that were still in Despecialized that are completely gone here.

What does /tv/ think?

Is Harmy going to use footage from this for Despecialized 3.0? GOUT shots in Despecialized looks super grainy.¿, here they don't.
>>
>>66437716
>>66437429

ok. I watched the despecialzed editions. but what is the point of this grainy film resto? like it has worse details. I get it that its all original, but why?
what does this recreate? theater experience? was film this bad ever shown on theaters?
>>
>>66437536
omg, which one of those 30 fake download links is the actual torrent?
>>
>>66437879
closer to the original theatrical prints people experienced in the 70s.

Despecialised editions are cleaned up and color corrected for the modern era. They never actually looked like that in the 70s.

Say what you will about the rest of the series, but the '90s SE ending for RotJ is infinitely better than the original.

sorry, I only deal with private tracker sites. I dont touch public torrents.

unfortunately the nazi rules on private trackers dont allow fan edits.

also, with 34 seeders, why the fuck is the download going at 18kbps?
>>
>>66438261
Definitely. We need an edit of Despecialized with that ending ASAP.
>>
>>66438283
actually, I just checked and its on PTP now. that's a first

so you're telling me the film looked that bad in theaters when it came out?

And the music from the 2004 version is even better. Some of the other changes (better explosions and more Biggs in ANH, seeing more of Cloud City in ESB) are better, too. The problem is that Lucas thew so much shit in with the good that the kinds of people who create these fan edits refuse to acknowledge there was anything good about the special editions besides cleaning up the visuals. That means you're either stuck with Lucas's monstrosities or reconstructions of the movies as the were originally, instead of some happy medium.

>Despecialised editions are cleaned up and color corrected for the modern era.

Of course they are cleaned up. Film imperfections aren't part of the movie unless they were on the original negative, and he kept those.

They are color corrected to match the originals as much as possible. Star Wars has mostly accurate color because it's matched to a rare technicolor print that has little degradation. Not sure about empire or jedi. And until someone scans a technicolor print, raw restorations are not more accurate than despecialized, their colors are degraded.

What remains a problem for despecialized is crushed blacks because the bluray is still the highest quality source.

Also any time a new source comes out with advantages over despecialized, harmy just incorporates it. A good bit of star wars despecialized still uses laserdisk/dvd sources so it's blurry as fuck, but now those can be replaced with 35mm.

Film degrades over time, even with cleanup, especially in a non-professional context, there's a limit to what you can do, especially if it was a poorly preserved print, this is especially true of prints that are copies that were sent out to theaters and shown countless times back in the day, whereas a studio restoring it will usually have the original to work from and access to better technology overall and more experienced people.
>>
>>66445462
I get that, that's why film is only good for about 75 showings.

I dont get he point of restoring a used up film.

its like trying to listen on an xrayed print copy of a vinyl more than 4 times.
>>
Star Wars is not a good enough film to justify a dozen autistic "restoration" projects.

I'll give every version that comes out a chance but I like the coloring of the Silver Screen edition and if there's something out there like it for ESB and Jedi I want that too. I watched ESB after coming home from TFA and the blue hue that's on everything was really distracting once I noticed it. This is comparison shot is just where it looks most silly.

Even if we get an official OT release down the line this will probably still be in it and I'll just have to live with it.
>>
>>66445544
Because it's the best you can do, since iirc Lucas fucked up the originals themselves for the special edition changes, so all we've got, as far as anyone knows, is a variety of prints with varying levels of damage from repeated viewings, less-than-optimal storage condditions, and the natural degeneration in quality that comes from being a copy of a copy in most cases, but people are obviously very interested in seeing the original versions without the crushed blacks and weird tinting from those dvds, and in a higher resolution.

Basically, as various prints surface, get scanned and restored, it'll either prompt lucasfilm/disney to eventually release professionally restored copies from the best possible print, or at least for more and more prints to surface until a good one comes out, or at least the highest quality bits from each to be frankensteined together to get the best possible version.

I dont think they can restore the original. they fucked up and inserted the SE into the original negatives instead of making a copy.

what is this crushed blacks you all keep saying. Example please?

Look how Han's jacket is super dark and literally blends in with the background, the colors are so poorly handled on it that, no matter how much you brighten it, Han's jacket will always melt into the background, because the blacks are 'crushed' meaning they are black to the point of irrecoverable data loss
>>
>>66446430
I'm not one of the people complaining about that but it seems like this is a good example, all the detail around Luke's head is lost.
