I will always hold Avatar in a certain regard.
Let's ignore people's opinions on whether the movie is good or not. Cameron wanted to create his own world. A sci-fi world filled with alien life and landscapes of his own design. He wanted to present this world to audiences in 3D and developed new tech in order to deliver the best viewing experience possible.
Nobody thought this movie would be a success. It's sci-fi, it's not backed up by a successful franchise, or any franchise for that matter, and it delivered a strong hippie message. And it cost several hundred million dollars. The studio thought it would bomb hard, like they did with Titanic before it came out. Cameron kept going because he didn't do it for money or awards, but because he had a vision and a creative drive to show people this world. Avatar was at no point a soulless cashgrab but a work of passion. It was a super risky venture. On top of that the sci-fi elements in Avatar were thought out, well designed, and relatively realistic. And that is why I respect Cameron and Avatar.
TFA on the other hand was HERE IS STAR WARS GIB MONIES PLS!

That can't be the sole reason. 3D has been done before and usually such gimmicks wear off very fast. Avatar had legs. Word of mouth carried that movie for months. I remember my mom telling me about a female colleague of hers. That colleague and her husband saw Avatar in the theater and my mom told me they were ecstatic. They loved the love story and the animals and the world and the action scenes but 3D wasn't mentioned. I think with that movie Cameron hit a nerve in a very primal and resonating way that just grabs people. I think it's the same with Titanic.

Avatar was the best modern cinemagoing experience I've had, and is still the only good example of stereoscopic 3D being used to its full potential. I'm completely confident Avatar 2 is going to be a similarly incredible trip, whereas Star Wars Episode VIII is just going to be another tawdry nostalgia cash-grab relying entirely on recycling the best parts of a 35-year-old trilogy to draw an audience.

Both are considered sci-fi (only Avatar rightfully so) and are full of action, aliens and exotic locations. Both will branch out into more epic story-telling and plotlines. Not really. The marketing was very strong and people knew that the root of the prequels (Lucas) is not involved. They rekindled the nostalgia flame and they did a great job with that but the movie itself is nothing special. It's just another big budget popcorn movie. Obiously not as bad as the Transformers or Hobbit movies but the reasons people use to shit on Avatar can be used 1:1 to shit on TFA.
