Very interesting movie. It's like almost all of the component parts where where well done, but the unified whole just didn't work. The protagonist was interesting, the child-actress robot nailed it, George Clooney was good, their chemistry was good, it had the typical above-average direction that Brad Bird brings, all the action sequences where well-done, the world-building was pretty thorough, it looks great... but it just didn't work in the end.
It had parts that were way too tonally dark for the movie it was presenting itself to be, the pacing was frustrating, they didn't get to Tomorrowland fast enough, and as a result the third act wasn't super coherent and the villains were boring, the ending was completely forgettable, it kind of tries to appeal to everyone but ends up pleasing nobody, a lot of things are unexplained or fucking confusing. It's like how did they get A+ effort put into the film when the script story and structure was so half-assed? It's an exceptionally produced, piece of shit story built on a forced premise by Disney to promote a ride or whatever that nobody gives a shit about. It came *this* close to pulling it all together but when it didn't everything kind of fell apart. It's one of the most interesting movies of the year, just as a case study for how you can get so much right in a film and still shit the bed.

Anyone that actually understands the source of the Mary Sue trope should fucking understand that it's stupid as fuck to apply it to protagonists, especially in adventure and fantasy genres. ALL fucking protagonists in those genres are essentially Mary Sues. And when everyone is, no one is. Mary Sue is a trope that applies EXPLICITLY to idealized, author-surrogate secondary characters introduced in FAN FICTION to interact with the heroes of the existing fictional universe. Max Landis' (who started the whole Mary Sue hivemind last month) point when he called Rey a Mary Sue was to accuse the movie of being fucking fan faction, first and foremost. Trying to apply the Mary Sue trope to protagonists in original adventure films completely missed the point of the fucking term, and protagonists.
And quit pretending like there's diagnostic criteria and some kind of checklist for the trope. Before the MaRey Sue circlejerk there was absolutely no agree-upon definition. And it's ironic that you say "nonmemeing definition" and then precede to list the traits of the exact fucking meme.
