>>
>>64905991

It isn't that he tried to live differently.

It's that he burned a pile of cash instead of giving it away.
>>
>>64905991
Because he had a family you dipshit.

How hard is it to leave a note?

There are millions of people who go camping. You don't let your family think you're dead.

The only reason he didn't tell his family was because his mother would bitch at him for like five minutes before be left or he might have to endure a two minute phone call. He put ridiculous amounts of grief on his family to avoid minor responsibilities. Also if he'd have let authorities know where he was and regularly kept contact he wouldn't have died, but he autistically searched for muh perfect isolation no contact at all ever I can do this even though I have literally no experience.

I like the film and I don't think it was condoning him, but he's not just living his life different, he's a cunt.

You can't take a multidimensional experience and only consider its final portion.

The journey, not the destination - and all that.

I don't think anyone disagrees that he died in a shitty way, in a foreseeable way, in a regrettable way. That doesn't make him a bad person, it makes him a kid. I was a shit-head when I was 22, I probably couldn't live on my own for 1 month, much less over a year.

>>64908195
>>64908231
Survivalism is more than camping. If you've done it you'd understand. It's a personal journey when you're by yourself, it's a form of meditation.

It's the antithesis of what most of us do: watching events with detached bemusement.

>In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer suggested two factors may have contributed to McCandless's death. First, he offered that McCandless was running the risk of a phenomenon known as "rabbit starvation" due to increased activity, compared with the leanness of the game he was hunting.

>an article in the September 2007 issue of Men's Journal by Matthew Powers states that extensive laboratory testing showed there were no toxins or alkaloids present in the H. alpinum seeds McCandless had been eating. Dr. Thomas Clausen, the chair of the chemistry and biochemistry department at UAF said "I tore that plant apart. There were no toxins. No alkaloids. I'd eat it myself". Analysis of the wild sweet peas, given as the cause of McCandless' death in Into the Wild, found no toxic compounds and there is not a single account in modern medical literature of anyone being poisoned by this species of plant. As Powers put it: "He didn't find a way out of the bush, couldn't catch enough food to survive, and simply starved to death".

He could have been poisoned, or he could have starved or died of malnutrition.

>>64908063
>I respect how simply and easily he gave up worldly possessions
Your worldview is hideously skewed. Some kid who went out without any experience, poisoned himself, and starved to death. That kind of insane wonton irresponsibility while shitting all over the other human beings in his family does not warrant any kind of "respect".
You need to get your head out of the fucking clouds already.
>>
No one can properly criticize the kid's character - they just end up projecting their own insecurities and flaws up onto him.

>>64908463
Again: He did MORE than (mistakenly) poisoning himself. He did a lot more. In that one or so year he was away he saw things, did activities, made decisions that required more from him than nearly any of us have given in all our lives.

You're the one who is skewed here - refusing to acknowledge 4/5ths of his adventure, the nature and aspects of it, the sheer impressiveness of it all in a pre-electronic, pre-gps, pre-cell phone age. With no credit card and no car even.

There is no standard romanization.

Nirvana (Sanskrit, also nirvāṇa; Pali: nibbana, nibbāna

Yeah, sure it does.

Look - I've backpacked, couchsurfed, hiked and stuff. I understand the draw. He did more than I ever did, and in a much less safe way (no gps, phone, internet, etc.) and I'm personally impressed by that aspect.

I couldn't care less that he didn't call home, he was angsty and passionate and it manifested itself in whatever ways it did. Everyone who knew him give him all the credit in the world for his heart and character. I'll take their word for it over you basement dwellers.

Just came naturally, friendo.

Jesus Christ /tv/ truly is the most retarded place on the internet. At least /b/ acknowledges it.

So many sheltered first world babies in this thread that couldn't bear to live without out their 9-5 or their university or their vidya or their hentai.
>>
>>64908923

You're in your late 20's, and this is all you've done?

No wonder you're impressed.

I grew up doing the kind of shit McCandless did. A lot of people did.
>>
>>64909258
Most third worlds can't live without modern amenities either. Stop trying so hard senpai
>>
>>64904977
They are so cute

>I grew up doing what McCandless did

Running around in the woods behind your house and getting lost for an hour and a half does not count as "doing the kind of shit McCandless did"
>>
>>64909377
Your life is shallow and meaningless, senpai.

But he's right though. Enjoy being a lonely 40 year old.

My dad was a wilderness EMT in Nome. We went out for months at a time since I was 10, all over the bush.

Then when he died I moved to Phoenix. When I was 16 I dropped out of high school and squatted by the Salton Sea.
>>
>>64909635
Oh yeah sure you did bud
>>
>>64909679

I did that for three years, wintering by the Salton Sea, and spending the spring, summer, and fall months hiking up and down the PCT.

Bet your a virgin too
>>
>>64909752

I was a virgin until I was 19, when I started going to film school at SCC (Scottsdale). I won a Student Academy Award for my work there; lost my virginity to a really fat 40 -year old woman I met on a phone chat line called LiveLinks.

He tried to find himself, and unfortunately died doing so. Whether he died alone in nature or driving down a busy highway, it doesn't fucking matter. All you tards arguing about how he committed suicide or how he wasnt prepared in nature didn't understand the movie. It was a journey to find himself, his journey took him to Alaska. Other peoples journeys maybe involve a vacation or something else. People are different. And in the end he finally found himself, and what his OWN happiness was, and that was around others and sharing that happiness together.
>>
>>64909838
>And in the end he finally found himself

How do you know this?
>>
>>64909875
I watched the movie and read the book.

So did I, and in neither of those is that conclusion even suggested.

>>64909924

After that I went to ASU and got a degree in linguistics and moved to the Tetons.

Someone actually told me this movie would be life changing. The whole "Money doesn't buy happiness" or something. Bullshit, it's pointless materialism that doesn't get you happiness. Money gets you to places.
>>
The guy was some kind of proto-neet. He was a Reagan supporter, claimed to hate everyone except the people he actually took the chance to know. No way his parents would of let him waste away in their basement so he traveled the world in search of another kind of den. He might have thought nature and survival would be his entertainment.

Despite all that I still respect him in some ways.

>It made me laugh, considering the irony that he died eating food but getting no nourishment, in the same way he lived experiencing life but not getting anything out of it.
They don't know for sure what killed him. The current leading theory is that he ate a plant known as grasspea that rapidly causes leg paralysis in young men without much fat.
His diary entry says that after eating wild potato seeds he was unable to walk

Looks like even cuck-posting is less triggering than a Into the Wild thread for /tv/.

Never change, autists.

You are right. This is a good and accurate post.

Nope, you gotta experience solitary happiness and happiness with people in a balance. Which way that balance swings depends on your personality

The autist introverted retard who died because he couldntt read well.

Nice movie.
