What's are the worst Oscar wins in history? Doesn't matter which category, just the ones which made people wft or just blatently didn't deserve it.

The Artist won best picture in 2012 and I still don't know why or how.
>>
>>64869889

This was a very good film and a safe choice, not nearly the worst. It was beautifully directed and acted, charming, and about Hollywood, which the Academy loves. Script didnt amount to much, but still a good film.
>>
The Artist was wonderful, and it deserved the award. I thought it was much better than all the other nominated films. There are far better examples of undeserved wins.
>>
>>64869889
The Artist is a terrific facsimile of the Silent Era. The only people who think it doesn't deserve the awards it received are those with no understanding of Cinema history and the difficulties of creating and selling a silent movie in this era.

It's a far more important film than something like Dances With Wolves.
>>
>>64869889
This was a very shit film and a safe choice, very nearly the worst. It was terribly directed and acted, grotesque, and about cucks, which the Academy loves. Its win didnt amount to much, but still a shit flick.

Paddy was such a fucking prophetic genius. Apart from Altered States being the greatest drug movie of all time, Network was so ahead of it's time that the premise of it's shock show is probably simmering with some TV producers today:

"A show that follows REAL TERRORISTS committing REAL ACTS OF TERROR every week, and we get to follow them back to their HQs to see how they live and eat and deal with the day-to-day."

Also, because I love saying this to West-Wing-Newsroom-fags; Sorkin is a poor-man's Chayefsky, with a quarter of the talent and zero subtlety. When Paddy wrote a 5-min monologue, no matter how unnatural it is for a person to talk that long and eloquently about anything, you were scared from how honest and insightful the character was being. When sorkin does it, it's a fucking checklist for SJWs and PC-police the world over. Sorkin is a fucking hack.

Honestly? IMO (and a shit ton of people will disagree with me on this) when you have a year like that, where you can objectively say that they're all great, you go with the highest grossing film that most of the american public went to see. I know people hate me for saying that, but it's the way I feel about it. Especially when Rocky beat all the others at the box office so badly, and was a great movie.

The movie itself when compared to the cinema of the past fifty years or so is not all that great. The movie itself is instead remembered for the techniques that it combined into a single film and popularized for movies at large, like the use of flashbacks and a nonlinear temporal stream, as well as deep focus and low angle shots, makeup techniques, etc.

>but citizen kane and rear window will still be loved, and remembered, and praised as the greatest films ever made

Citizen Kane and Rear window were beat, respectively, by How Green was my Valley and On the Waterfront.

A lot of people love How Green and it has a solid reception, but sure it's now overshadowed by Citizen Kane (and the rest of Ford's later career). It remains a good movie.

On the Waterfront is considered to be among the greatest American films ever made and one of Brando's best performances, its reception is on par with Rear Window's. Maybe normies don't know it enough, but that's only because Hitchcock is extremely popular so Rear Window is instantly more famous. Both are extremely well-received so it's not a good example in my opinion.

I'm curious about how this works out and I imagine in my head that it goes like this:

Studio A is making a WWII movie.
Studio B catches wind
Given that all studios have, most likely, 50 WWII movie scripts sitting around, and at least a couple directors who have expressed interest in making one, Studio B decides to make one too (for reasons)
Studio C follows suit.

Or it's just a coincidence. But really, seeing that Hitgirl movie trailer immediately before the Independence day 2 trailer made me think about this again. Who thought it was a good idea to release a big budget movie about aliens when the biggest alien movie success's sequel is coming out and then put the trailers together?

KvK was the first movie to look at separation and divorce from the man's perspective. Streep later said in interviews that her mental picture of her character (a complete cunt) was "I never loved him" and it shows. Good movie even if you aren't a raging MRA.

Apocalypse Now came out just as we were starting to tire of Vietnam oscar bait (Coming Home, I'm looking at you).

>This beat Taxi Driver, All The President's Men AND Network. Think about that for a moment.
It was a year of excellent nominees for BP, someone had to win and the rest had to lose. The Academy took the underdog narrative too literally and gave it to the newest kid on the block. And we got Rocky V as thanks.

The Hurt Locker was essentially an action thriller. Obviously the "important" subject matter made it more awards friendly.

She won her Oscar by doing one of the two things that usually guarantee it:

1. name actress appearing topless for the first time showing they're serious about their craft (see also Helen Hunt's wet t-shirt in As Good As It Gets)
2. Homely to ugly actress in their first major role (Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Kathy Bates in Misery) which ironically kills their career because now studios are worried they'll ask too much

That's not all Best Actresses of course but those two categories are the equivalent of Name Actor Plays Cripple/Tranny/Jew/Slave for men.

The advent of CGI nudity is going to kill the first category dead in a few years.

Chayefsky was no one's idea of a conservative but he rightly felt that this wasn't a holiday where actors' political opinions suddenly had a forum regardless of what they were. He lived through the blacklist and didn't appreciate overfed handsome people being able to show off without consequence.

And Nicholson got his only Oscar for playing the cripple even though it's painfully obvious Melvin was written for someone younger and shlubbier with zero charisma like PSH had grown tired of playing.
"Taxi" was a great dialogue show without being all Sorkin and AGAIG was James Brooks in top form here as well.

I know the Le Based Cameron meme but Titanic winning over Good Will Hunting is pretty much everything wrong with Hollywood.

Just because its's BIG and popular and had a scale only possible through dodging Union labor laws by utilizing Mexican slave labor doesn't mean it's GOOD. In fact there are parts of this movie that are just plain awful. A big dumb self indulgent horribly written movie defeating a low budget tightly written perfectly acted character drama is just embarrassing. Hollywood rewarding their paycheck plain and simple.

In 1948 Bill and Coo won an honorary academy award. The movie is about a city of birds. It wasn't released until after the ceremony. They were just that excited about a movie about birds.

Too bad Hollywood didn't listen to him. Redgrave was not even the worse. Clooney and Arquette were more ridiculous.

I figure this year they will show once more that they didn't listen.

This would've won, only Coppola was too good that year.

>The Conversation won the Palme d'Or at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival.[1] It was nominated for three Academy Awards in 1974 and lost Best Picture to The Godfather Part II, another Francis Ford Coppola film.

Seriously, the only time two deserving films by the same Director that could've easily won the Oscar if they were released in different years.
