I agree that more original backstory would have been a good thing. I also agree that over reliance on pre-existing material is a kiss of death for most films. The Revenge of the Sith (and to a less degree Attack of the Clones) script is a much stronger example of this. But I think it's fair to expect that when the SEVENTH installment in a film series comes out, the intended audience is at least passingly familiar with the storylines of the previous films; at least familiar enough to follow the plot of the new ones.
