How did this movie make so much money? It came out of nowhere with no hollywood stars, made the most money ever (for its time), and then just disappeared without a trace of cultural relevance or impact.

I mean at least Pirates of the Carribean created a staple Hollyween costume. This movie just came and went, like many movies do, only somehow it made a bajillion dollars. How? What did it do and why don't other rather meaningless action scam-you movies do so?

but the only movies that can achieve that order of magnitude of success are sequels and capeshit/starwars (movie of what is already an established part of pop culture). Every no-name popcorn movie markets inself with a quote from a critic going "best action film ever" "or highest May weekend opening ever" what made Avatar's version of THE MOST MOVIE EVER marketing especially successful?

If it didn't have 3D, Titanic would have been the money making king still.
I doubt Avatar 2 will do as well as the first, but you never know.

This has already been asked and answered a million times here:

1. New 3D technology people want to see, and that technology makes tickets more expensive.
2. A lot of third-worlders have never seen anything so pretty, so saw it in droves and created mad publicity when they got depressed/suicidal leaving the theatre to go back to their shitty lives.

That is literally it.

The original trailer was actually appealing.

https://youtu.be/5PSNL1qE6VY?t=2m49s

The later trailers removed mention of Terminator 1 and 2, Aliens and True Lies. They just left Titanic in there for the plebs.

In India, people usually don't watch much Hollywood movies. But Avatar is a sanskrit name, so many people from India went to see the film. And with a population of 1.2 billion people, it significantly addendum the revenue.
