I suppose it would depend on how the viewer sees it. I always interpreted it as Dave just being absolutely terrified the whole time when he's back in the ship, but his fear fuels him to deactivate Hal. So when Hal reverts back to his first operation, the Daisy bit, Dave is just fucking confused as well as scared but goes along with it just to keep him sated in a way.

There are very little differences and most of them are because of technical limitations. For example, in the book the monolith is located on Saturn, but they couldn't build the ring for the movie so they made it on Jupiter instead.
