windu was arguably the most skilled combatant of all the jedi during the prequels. what follows is some expanded universe shit, so take from it what you will.
windu was formerly master of the jedi council, but stepped down and became battlemaster instead. battlemaster is fairly self explanatory, concerned with jedi combat training and the order's military assets. mace is ridiculously good swordsman who uses an unusually aggressive lightsaber technique called vapaad, which he created himself. he spooked the fuck out of the rest of the jedi and a lot of them were concerned with his balls to the wall fighting style and gung-ho attitude. yoda and he were always bros, so nothing really came of whatever anxiety existed. hopefully this gives anyone curious a bit of context without getting bogged down with wookiepedia autism.

When you think about it, Windu's character could have been a lot cooler in the films (like so many other things) if this kind of thing was emphasized. Sam Jackson is just the kind of guy that should be able to pull off a straight-faced murder weapon style too.
