this is basically as accurate as saying all American fils can be summarized as
>MUH COWBOYS AND INDIANS

Japan and Taiwan over all

As someone pretty well versed in Asian Cinema, I'd say Japanese Cinema has the most depth followed by Hong Kong. Taiwan is pretty much only Edward Yang but he alone probably makes it third and I find almost all Korean films I've seen ridiculously pulpy.

Most PRC films I've seen are either ridiculously traditional or at the very beginning of attempting anything interesting. I'd like to see what they release of the next 20 years though.

If we include Indian Cinema I'd say it's up there with Hong Kong and Japan if slightly behind and apart from those most of the other countries in southeast Asia are negligible.

Except Tsai Ming-liang and Hou Hsiao-hsien are enough to put Taiwan over Hong Kong.

Nah, Wong Kar Wai, John Woo, Jackie Chan, Alex Law, Kirk Wong not to mention the early traditional work.

Really honestly Taiwan just doesn't have near enough talent. Yang is world class though. The other two you mentioned are far less interesting if they were from another country.
