It did afterwards. There was a good collage posted during the release hype about all of the day one reviews praising it as "a masterpiece of Lucas" and such.

I went to see TPM on the second weekend with my mom, who was a fan of the OT and introduced me to SW, and she told me immediately after the movie that she disliked it. I disagreed with her, but there was not some post-PT unanimous realization of their quality or lack thereof. Opinions have always been divided about them
