PNG saves images by remembering repeating pixles. For example a completely white background wouldn't be stored as "WHITE WHITE WHITE WHITE WHITE ..." but as "100000 pixels of white please". This obviously only is useful if there are large arrays of the same colour present, as is the case with vector graphics and generally computer-drawn images. Images where there is not a lot of repetition of the same colour, e.g photographs or computer generated graphics with gradients actually become larger when converted to PNG. In that case you should use JPG instead.
