It is Malick outlining his version of Christianity with feeling rather than dialogue and plot. If that isn't your thing, I wouldn't recommend watching his movies.

I'm a big Cassavetes fan but I do agree, Husbands was an experiment gone awry. Ebert's review nailed it.
