I was really upset with the writing, especially when compared to stuff like Prisoners or Enemy.
Plot and dialogue was boilerplate cartel drug war drama and kind of predictable
I didnt like that they were upfront about Benicio's intentions (why are you here, who are you, who do you work for, etc - they spoonfed the mystery). I would have preferred the mystery of his character to be under wraps - to have the audience not realize that hes a shady character from the get-go.
That being said, directing and cinematography were excellent

Yes. It was a government sanctioned hit. It looks bad on the international stage when the US sends American soldiers in to assassinate a drug cartel in an attempt to reign the drug tade into something more controllable. So you send someone who can't be traced back to you if shit hits the fan.
