I was an adult when Ep 1 came out.
Went to go see it.
I thought it fucking rocked. That Darth Maul fight is still the top fight in the Star Wars universe. Second only to the Yoda fight.
The shit talking really didn't start in earnest until ep 3 debuted. Ep 2 was probably the most hated and that is when the shit talking started. Ep 1 was liked well enough that people were excited for the rest.
OP, history will prove you right. Darth Maul was maybe the best villain after Vader and that fight was the best overall.

Not to get too into it, but my family was in a bad way when Episode 1 was coming out.
My mom decided to show me Star Wars before it came out so we could go see it, and we never got to see movies in the theater. We rented the trilogy and watched it in one sitting, only getting up for lunch and shit breaks in the toilet room. I sat through it for her, what a weird series, not my cup of tea. I was 10 and dad wasn't there so I had to make her happy and be the man of the house, sitting through what seemed like 9 hours of wankery.
Episode I was even worse. It LOOKED cool up on the big screen, all crisp unlike our tv with some VHS copies of worn out star wars from the video store, but god damn that bit with the kid and the racing was actually boring rather than exciting. I find it hard to believe an adult wrote that, that some self-respecting script writer didn't hand it off to his son and tell him to pen something he'd like to see. A cool kid winning a race. alright. whatever.
My mother died and I never saw episodes II or III and I'm not going to see VII, VIII or IX.

It's true actually. In the OT ESB really didn't have any true spaceship battles. You just got the Falcon running from the Empire throughout the movie. Unlike ANH and ROTJ which both had the huge Death Star battles at the end.

I'm not sure, have you noticed that even people who claim to like the movie can only talk about how X suchs or Y sucks. They never really have anything outside "THIS WAS AWESOME" but they're also capable of tearing it apart. It's a shame because overall it's the worst movie but individually it has the coolest scenes in the prequels.
The entire opening on Coruscant is great, with the seedy underbelly of the city and 20's Shanghai/Blade Runner vibe. The Obi-Wan/Jango fight is great, as is the ensuing space battle. The scenes with Dooku trying to convert Obi-Wan are really well-acted and staged. The giant fight at the end is good too.
It's just everything that frames those sequences that's the problem. More than anything else he's ever made, George needs to take that film back into the editing suite, clean up the effects and re-release it as a director's cut.

AotC is just such a mess. It's definitely the most frustrating because it could have been good. It's meant to show disruption and evil beneath the republic starting to show its ugly face and form, but it just fails so spectacularly. Like you said it has some great stuff (including Actoss the Stars) which makes it such a jarring juxtaposition of quality in every aspect.
I would have loved to see more of Dooku tempting obi wan because that dynamic seemed the most intriguing but it just went nowhere.
