All I can think of is that they originally had something much more extreme in mind, and then at the last moment decided to go with Gollum

Looks like shit.
He just looked like Gollum to me. The same kind of facial ticks and head movements. You'd think the guy who is typecast as THE motion capture actor would have found a little more range.
