Blame the rest of the world, especially China. Minions and Fast 7 made 70% of their box office internationally.
Parents these days religiously take their kids to the movies. When I was growing up, it was kind of a rare treat, nowadays parents just do it to kill three hours of time their kids are awake.
I think more people see movies these days because they don't want to be left out of all the shit they see on social media. Like people just had to see Jurassic World just to see it, even though in a vacuum, they probably wouldn't choose to see based on its objective value. The Force Awakens is like that, too. People almost see it to get it out of the way.
