Everything TMFAP and Laura say comes together and actually helps Cooper solve the crime in some fashion. The three things the giant tells him to look for also help. There's a payoff to the weirdness.
And I loved the ambiguity over whether BOB was a genuine demon or just a manifestation of the evil that was already inside the killer.While I don't care about Leland being a good guy or a genuine rapist too much, I don't want to believe that there was always evil inside of Cooper.

Many of the first surrealist directors only ever created the genre because they were attempting to scare the shit out of what they saw as the complacent bourgeoisie.
Unfortunately as directors like Buñuel/Dali found, they just embraced it, and sought out meaning where none was intended.
In Buñuel's own words, exasperated by the positive reaction and deconstruction of his classic surrealist film "Un Chien Andalou", they were an "inane herd that saw beauty or poetry in something which was basically no more than a desperate impassioned call for murder".

It only appears to represent such a corny sitcom because one of the overarching themes of the show is the contrast between the way people present themselves and what their lives are actually like. They are all pretending to live an "Eastenders" existence, and yet every single character has at least one decisive flaw, and many are caught up in something far more disturbing.
