>I'm especially interested in the ones that show the First Doctor's character the best (not necessarily the ones with the best plot or setting).
Here's a list, it's not a top 5 but you can pick the 5 that interest you more.
The first episode of An Unearthly Child and the start of the second, before they get out of the TARDIS. You can watch the whole story if you want to, but I wouldn't recommend it.
The Edge of Destruction is not excellent, but it's very interesting in terms of characterization.
The Aztecs is a must-see.
The Dalek Invasion of Earth, or at least the speech at the end.
The Romans, The Space Museum or The Time Meddler (or all of them) for the funnier side of the First Doctor (I prefer The Time Meddler; The Space Museum is generally hated, but I liked it, while The Romans is generally very well-liked but I'm not that keen on it)
If you can bear to watch reconstructions, I think The Daleks' Masterplan does a great job of showing all the sides of the Doctor's character across 12 episodes.
Also a recon, the final episode of The Massacre (Hartnell is barely there for most of the serial, but there's a great scene at the end).
Either The War Machines or The Tenth Planet to get a taste of the First Doctor at the end of his run. While The Tenth Planet is his regeneration story, he's missing for most of episode 3 and episode 4 is a reconstruction. I prefer The War Machines.

Yeah, nicking sandwiches and whatnot... at first glance you'd think Seven with his 'human pawn' motif, but he was generally doing it for their own good (like Ace in Ghost Light) and seemed to have some regrets in the books.

>By stars, is the Eleventh slack-jawed now. With no warning from the Old Girl, his Tenth self’s appeared, leaning on the control board; hair tousled, clothes wildly askew, face blooming red. Thank goodness Amy was out.

>”Hello,” his past says, husky and inviting. ”Fancy seeing you again, Bowties.”

>”Ph-ph-phased back to the wrong point in the time line, I presume?”

>”Yeah,” Ten sighs. ”But I don’t really mind ending up with some honey-hearted codger like you, Chinny.”

>”Skinny little brat,” Eleven grins, sauntering closer. ”You don’t know what I’m capable of.”

>”Tease.” Ten slings an arm out and around and pulls himself into a hug. ”Y’know, we’ve seen each other enough times before. Why don’t we have a proper fuck already?”
>>
>>64441568
>”What? I-I, wha– maybe? Really? Now? Literally right now?”

>”Something the matter?” Ten loosens his grip and looks him in the eye, curious.

>”It’s just that–” Eleven feels the blood rushing to his face and his fingers twiddling. ”–I’ve kind of gotten myself a new love interest. Human.”

>”Oh. Congrats, mate.”

>”Thanks. But she’s… very experienced.” Eleven sighs, drags a hand through his thick fringe as an excuse to rub his temple. ”She’s so gorgeous, and so active. She rode me so good on our first night together, and I just – didn't even do anything, I just lay there–!”

>”Stop! Right there. Just, stop.” Ten puts a finger up to his future lips, gesturing to his own barely buttoned shirt. His abdomen is still sweaty and red from the clawing of nails.

>”I just got back from Four’s place after having pretty much every single thing from the toy box stuck inside or on me, and coming harder and harder by the minute. Trust yourself, you might have gotten shyer or whatever, but there’s no shame in that. You know how to please humanoids.”

>”Th-that may be true, but–”

>”Come on then, Sweethearts,” Ten growls, breath like steam against his neck. ”Practice on me.”

>”Mmm, she said she’d like to…”

>”How communicative, I already like her. Now let’s find some place soft…”

Why is the first episode of Doctor Who so good?

Even for the time it's genre-aware, sets up an interesting mystery, and has good characters. Hell, even the editing and music are really good for 60s television.

Why is the stupid caveman story afterwards so shite?

Sure, I'll play. I've been ignoring the EDAs since Night basically confirmed BF as McGann's story, but I kind of like the idea they have their own little AU continuity. Can I just start with Alien Bodies and soak in the Lawrence Miles experience, or is it more arc-based?

>>64452121
> I've been ignoring the EDAs since Night basically confirmed BF as McGann's story
That's kinda silly, even ignoring that BF has used EDA characters. For Night to 'confirm the true McGann story' would imply that 'the true McGann story' is a concept with a meaningful bearing on absolutely anything.

The classic TARDIS console room was one of the most popular things about Hell bent. In fact it was proberbly one of the best things about series 9 as a whole. Why don't they just use that "skin" for the Doctor's current console room?. hell if they need an in series explanation for it, just say that the interior settings have fucked up like the chameleon circuit.

I've only ever occasionally had nsfw dreams. Less than 10 that I have been able to recall probably throughout the course of my life. I've never had a nocturnal emission. Do wet dreams actually happen? Was I too ugly an adolescent to have succubi abscond away with my seed while I slumber?
>>64455642
Because they already spent all that sweet TV liscence cash on the current desktop and want to get as much life out of it as possible. As for why not the next go round /who/ nose. It will probably depend on the next showrunner and design team. A retro one mite b cool but i'd like one like 4's secondary or 7/8's feature movie one. Needs more wood and leather.
>>
>>64455611
You asked me what my dreams were last night, you didn't ask for /who/ related dreams
>>

Capaldi himself said in an interview once he'd like a retro inspired tardis console
maybe it'll happen if he stays around for a few more years, there's only so many more lights they can throw onto the current console
>>
>>64455739
>Do wet dreams actually happen?

Yes. Happened very frequently during my early years of puberty.
>>
>>64455642
It was cool because it was a nostalgic callback to the classic series. If they used it all the time it would just be the regular console room and as a regular console room it's not really as cool as what they're using.
>>

We never even saw any hallways or something. Honestly the coral tardis kind of sucks. The big coral pillars look fake as shit, the yellowish roundles in the backround don't look good and that big garbage bag thing on the top of the center. Well to be fair the current Tardis is a full set, the coral one was a partial one.
>>
>>64456100

Can't fault them for trying something different, but I'm glad they've moved past it. The only time we saw another part of that tardis was when 10 was choosing his outfit in what I guess was meant to be a wardrobe but was really just the console room with heavy green screening and a spiral staircase replacing the console

I wasn't too keen on 11's first tardis, it was an improvement as far as making it feel like something with more rooms but I wasn't fond of the whimsical messy look and it still had that one inexplicable coral wall

The current tardis console (the 7B, 8 and 9 incarnations all) are the first tardis in nuwho that actually looks like a machine, and it's also a really well designed set in general with all of the different potential filming spots in the one set
>>
>>64456418
>Well to be fair the current Tardis is a full set, the coral one was a partial one.

That's part of what I meant by practicalities
>>

I did it /who/, I marathoned all of River Song's stories in one day in the order from her perspective, meaning

>A Good Man Goes to War
>The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon
>Let's Kill Hitler
>Closing Time (just the last scene, where River gets kidnapped)
>The Wedding of River Song
>not rewatching Good Man and the series 6 opener because fuck it and I'm not even sure where they are in adult River's timeline anyway
>The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
>The Time of the Angels/Flesh and Stone
>The Angels Take Manhattan
>The Husbands of River Song
>Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead
>The Name of the Doctor

I have to say I found Husbands by far the most enjoyable. It seems like River Song always brought out the worst aspects of Moffat's writing in the Matt Smith era.
>cringey dialogue
>melodramatic speeches about how the Doctor is the most important and threatening guy in the universe
>all the season finales desperately trying to top each other by having the universe end in an even more spectacular way
>reused plots ideas like "the Doctor knows how he's destined to die and it's totally for sure going to happen that way even though we said that last time and he still got around it"
>arbitrary shit like not being able to go back for Amy and Rory somehow because Moffat says so and lol timey-wimey
>trying to take itself too seriously while also having absurd shit like the Doctor speaking baby
By the time I finished Angels Take Manhattan I was starting to seriously wonder why I even liked Doctor Who in the first place. Even otherwise tolerable episodes like the series 5 finale were rendered hard to watch because I got so sick of Moffat's writing. But Husbands is just a 10/10 all around comfy and enjoyable episode. I loved it despite having seen it recently and its being pretty late into the marathon. Why can't Moffat write more episodes like this that manage to have emotional impact while still being fun and don't have plots that are convoluted and nonsensical?

The Monsters are kind of stupid and don't really feel like much of a threat imo so it makes the whole premise shoddy. And I don't really care for the ending anymore. It's just a regular tv / film trope.
>>
>>64463681

If the doctor were actually aware he was in a TV show it would completely kill any emotional scene with him, as he would be aware ultimately that he is a work of fiction
Therefore any episodes where the doctor breaks the fourth wall are non canon by default to maintain the integrity of the narrative

It is merely a humorous literary device to get a little more of a laugh out of the audience. Basically saying: Yeah, we know this is funny, we're with you. Has been used since the old greeks and even Shakespeare has used it plenty of times (and I don't mean soliloquies or an aside). According to your logic, some of the greatest works of literary art are now no longer canon to their author's work.

The meme where directors legitimately believe that gopro cameras are acceptable to use in professional cinematography. They lack the focal range of proper professional cameras so the shots often look incredibly cheap as a result to the point where it can even kill immersion

Just look at this and tell me the gopro barrel shots aren't incredibly distracting and out of place

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nM7byUTrSZA
>>
>>64464392
Well I will admit that everything looked particularly fake but I think I was attributing it more to CGI than anything else, are you telling me that the fakeness stems from the actual cameras? if so it seems very amateurish.
>>
>>64464207

I agree. But just breaking the 4th wall does not mean that the character(s) know they are part of fiction.

You're talking about metafiction and intertextuality, but breaking the 4th wall only barely scratches the surface of metafiction if at all
>>
>>64464451

It depends what fakeness you're talking about. There's certainly CGI fakeness but there's also shots like this

Since gopros are tiny cameras their apertures are also inherently small, which results in a large depth of field that does not blend well with professional cameras that have an appropriate depth of field

In doctor who this effect is made even worse by the fish eye lens
>>
>>64464188
A two-minute joke. God. Unheard of.

Doctor Who is a deeply postmodernist metafictional work which has no canon, m8E
>>
>>64465658

Doctor who has multiple canons consisting of interlinking episodes which reference each other. There are multiple groups of episodes which reference each other but do not reference any episodes in another group, so they are not canon to each other but are still canon to themselves
