I don't know what it is. I guess I always felt AoD was the weakest in the Evil Dead trilogy and the TV series seems to mostly be in that style, but I just can't get into it.
The character of Ash has grown too cocky, the humour is ridiculously cliched and cringeworthy, a lot of the special effects look quite bad, the writing is bad and it feels really repetitive.
Does anyone else just not enjoy it?
My enjoyment started to drop towards the end, but I'm optimistic for season 2. I like the hokey, cheesy humor and sfx. Feels fitting for an evil dead showthe season end left a bitter taste in my mouth though

That's because it's made by largely the same people who did the original, and who are just rolling out an updated version of their old shtick. Evil Dead is pretty much the same now as it's always been. The only thing that ever changes is which MPAA rating they're going for. Whereas Star Wars has undergone several changes in ownership/creative control and consequent changes in tone. ANH was a clusterfuck of an amateur effort that was saved and turned into a decent summer flick through talented editing work. ESB was when the professionals were called in to do a serious effort. RotJ was when they turned it into a toy-selling cash grab. The Prequels, like the Hobbit movies, were when the director got full creative control and replaced the people who had been reigning in his worst tendencies with yes men. Ep VII is a cash grab but also a typical JJ movie, which means an ADHD mess with incoherent plot, unbelievable characters with no motivation to do the things they do, etc. If JJ had been directing Empire or Return of the Jedi, those movies would be just like Ep. VII

Just saw the first episode, literally perfect. I like how Pablo seems to represent the old fans and the Kelly represents the new fans, and the references and callbacks to the films were done so well, the nailed it with the right amount of slapstick comedy and gore. I was so worried it'd be a little bit shit and they'd overdo or underdo the goofiness but FUCK IT'S GOLD STAR GROOVY.
Imho the first episode was perfect because it felt like a blend of the first two movies + some army of darkness style humor, I don't know why they dropped all the scary parts in favor of action and comedy (only exception is ep10) when the first episode worked so well.
I liked the show but i think it could have been so much more. Also the ending sucked.

Being anti-climatic is fine, but there was no payoff to anything introduced throughout the season. Pablo's progression and potential for being a Brujo was reduced to barfing up demons and having to be rescued again. Kelly didn't justify her presence at all and just went full badass mode for no reason. The deadites being seemingly against Xena in the beginning of the season meant nothing. Ash's heel turn was fine but was handled poorly. He literally went from having his face cut off to agreeing to a truce in the span of a minute. It was a shoddily rendered reset button plain and simple, we're at the same place now that we were in episode two or three. I'm not expecting Shakespeare from this show, but when the entertaining aspects don't make up for the blatant flaws then it's a problem.

I'm not a fan of how much they are gimping Ash to be a complete pussy. The whole Florida vacation fantasy is a completely 2D copout to a potentially more interesting character. It doesn't help that the episode in which they introduced his dream vacation was the worst in the series, with a Windows Movie Maker cgi sequence and a completely obnoxious hispanic shaman.
Ash doesn't need to grow up and exhibit three-dimensionality, but sometimes I just can't stand his character in Ash vs Evil Dead. Half the time he does one liners now it's like they are trying too hard to recreate the magic and they are browbeating us.

I think they just try a little too hard to force all of the humor into the show and it kind of spoils the mood. Ash sold out to save Kelly and Pablo. Every single step of this journey, his only real goal has been to keep Kelly and Pablo out of the way of it. There's a "selfish" element to it, and it's ridiculously shortsighted, but at the end the Jacksonville shit was just a fig leaf because all that Ash could think was that he couldn't bear to be the last man standing AGAIN

In broad strokes, Xena and Ash are a lot alike. They both have unusual skills but are boorish and savage - Xena is an unstoppable killing machine, fluent in about 17 different languages and she invented CPR but she has no concept or interest in how to hold a polite conversation, plus she has terrible hygiene.
...And I just realized her idea of a perfect day would also be to get drunk, go fishing and never have to think about the terrible things she's seen again.

I really don't get why people are acting like this show is so overly wacky and zany. I think it's less wacky and zany than AOD. I mean, AOD had straight up slapstick comedy in it. This has only had small references to it.

The surreal horror doesn't work unless it's one person, isolated and by themselves because when it's that way, it leaves the character and audience wondering "Is the character actually going crazy, or is evil trying to trick him into going crazy?" That's why I think it works in ED II.
The end to this season is kind of likein AoD when Ash fucks up the words, brings the book back, and just wants to go home and everyone is pissed at him. Next season there will be a training montage and a vehicle built.

Sorta want Season 2 to have Ash become a leader of those survivalist guys they met this season, rather than have them just be a callback.
I liked the season overall, but there was something I couldn't put my finger on that left the ending episode somewhat unsatisfying until I read the thread. Holy fuck did they need to answer why the deadites were opposing Ruby in the last episode. Off the top of my head something about Ruby writing the book and having some sort of creator's hold over the book, but the book is powerful and sentient on its own and has its own desire to rule over the deadite army and control the world.
Fuck, the Necronomicon at this point isn't a prop, its a character. I like the front cover possessing a face idea, hope they reuse it next season. Maybe have it take over Ruby for the Ultimate Evil Form big bad.
