Please recommend me some good westerns? I really liked Tombstone and thought it was because of the cast and story, but after having watched 3:10 to Yuma and the recent one with Kurt Russell, turns out I really like the setting and the time period.
>>
TGtBatU, The Searchers, El Dorado, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Hondo, Unforgiven, the original True Grit, etc
>>
>>64413817
>The Searchers
>Stagecoach
>Rio Bravo
>Liberty Valance
>True Grit 1969
>El Dorado
>The Cowboys

If you liked The Hateful Eight, I recommend Stagecoach, a far superior film with a traveling group of colorful people trapped in a stagecoach.
>>
>>64414158
>>True Grit 1969

currently downloading the 2010 version. should i watch the original instead?
>>

>The Searchers
Truly one of the GOAT westerns, I reccmmend this one too.
Also, "Duck you suckers" is a really underrated Leone film, one of my favorites.
>>
>>64414244
Honestly, Duke gives Rooster a more erratic and go-get-em personality compared to the deadbeat, grumpy Dude. They're both well made, even though I find the 2010 a hallow shell imitator and Oscar bait ish.
>>
Not sure if it's exactly what yer looking for, but The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is pretty good.

DUCK, YOU SUCKER!
>>
Why is Kurt Russel in so many westerns with such godly manly mustaches and facial hair?
>>
>>64413817
Also watch Red River.
>>
Young Guns
Young Guns II
>>
>>64414517
Django Unchained is good up until that pointless shoot out. The movie ended when Django and Dr. Schultz received Brunhilda from Calvin. Uno Farto does not know how to end movies anymore, sadly.
>>
Young Guns series is fantastic
>>
>>64413817
If you're ok for something a bit different and can handle a musical (it's a very gritty musical with drunks singing) then Paint Your Wagon is GOAT. Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood in a musical
>>
>>64414625
you say pointless, i say cathartic
>>
>>64413817

High Plains Drifter is forever the GOAT

>>64414517

that movie started good until Cristoph Waltz totally breaks character and shoots Leo DiCaprio

>>64414625

this. it's as though, at that point, Quentin handed off the script to a 6 year old black kid who had the Civil War described to him in 5 minutes
>>
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Directors Cut.

Tuco is my hero.

Spurs at the window bitch.
>>
>>64413817
The Searchers
Red River
True Grit (both versions)
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Wild Bunch
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Unforgiven
The Good The Bad and The Ugly
A Fistful of Dollars
For a few dollars more
3:10 to Yuma
The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Days of Heaven
My Darling Clementine
Treasure of the Sierra Madre

>These movies influenced the western genre, and are pretty much westerns except the cowboys are replaced with samurai
Seven Samurai
Yojimbo
Sanjuro
Zatoichi series
Hara Kiri
The Hidden Fortress
>>
I actually liked North to Alaska, if you want to see a lighter, more up beat John Wayne western/frontier movie. It's directed by Henery Hathaway, who directed the original True Grit.

If not, definitely check out McLintock, also a good western comedy starring the Duke.
>>
Lot of good recommendations here. I would add Fort Apache.
>>
>>64414244
The original True Grit was one of Wayne's worst movies. It's garbage.
>>
>>64414814
Finally at least someone said 3:10 to Yuma.
>>

Henry*
>>

>All those John Wayne movies
>>
>>64414844
m8 he won himself an oscar for best actor, a time when oscars actually meant something.
>>
>>64414814
Hara Kiri is so fucking good. Easily one of my favorite movies ever. It's perfection in every aspect.
>>
>>64414881
Yeah, sorry, I grew up watching the Duke. I might check out spaghetti westerns one day.

I did see a Fistful of Dollars. It was GOAT.
>>
>>64414844
Get fucked.
>>
>>64414244
Neither are that great, but the original has more spunk, it's not illusory about its source material like the Coens remake, which is almost embarrassing how much they straight up copy. Waste of their time just to say they could do it.
>>
>>64414575
Kurt Russel is a baller, that's why.
>>
>>64414772
he didnt break character, shultz couldnt live knowing he was outsmarted by someone as evil as candy, and being a bounty hunter, shot him in a fit of rage
>>
>>64414902
He won a fucking sympathy Oscar like Reynolds did for Boogie Nights. You would know this if you knew anything about John Wayne. He was a terrible actor.
>>

>Listing those Kurosawa films
my nigga
>>
>>64413817

The Salvation (excellent danish-made film)
The Proposition (australian but fits western)
3:10 to Yuma
No Country For Old Men (modern western)
those clint eastwood movies
>>
The Tall T is a great basic western
>>
>>64414955
It's garbage. Literally his worst movie.
>>
>>64414996
>No Country For Old Men

Stop it with this bullshit
>>

I thought he, like the actress who played Maddie, were pretty good.

I did like the Coens 2010 version too, anon

that's fucking stupid and Schultz wasn't established to have such a delicate will to live at any point in the movie
>>

No Country For Old Men isn't really a western. It's more of a crime thriller with western undertones, 2bh family
>>

Django was a Mary Sue.

The 2010 True Grit follows the book unlike the 1969 version. Maddie is the main character and the Coen's bro movie did it better. The Searchers is a much better Wayne film, his Rooster was pretty bad.

he never tried something like rescuing the wife of a slave before, nor encountered someone as vile as calvin candy. again, him being someone who kills for a living could explain his lapse in reason, like a reflex
>>
>>64415140
Yeah, the Coens stayed true to the novel, but I just couldn't get into Jeff Bridges' Rooster. IIRC, he kept it safe, besides the shoot out at the end. I prefer spontaneous suicidal adventurer Duke Rooster.
>>
>>64415093
This and he was more in control than Django
>>
>>64415080
>tfw you will never hear a theme song before a western anymore
>>
>>64415275
calvin candy and shultz both appear to be sophisticated and refined, in control, but both of them loose control in the film
>>
>>64414625
I'd also like to add it didn't need Samuel Jackson in it. His character was too much.
>>
>>64414517
that 2pac song was so fucking out of place. what was quentin thinking?
>>
>>64415344
No, Calvin was portrayed to be a bottled up volcano, a guy who would explode at any moment, especially if you read the screenplay, which contains cut scenes from the final movie.

Dr. Schultz is the complete opposite, someone who was more in control of his actions and emotions. Even if the killing of the slave via dogs got to him, that still doesn't justify his out of character murder at the end.

>>

This.

I can't get into Westerns because they all end up looking the same because of that bland actor.
>>
>>64415460
Remember the scene when Dr. Schultz wanted to escort Django and Brunhilda out of the Candieland.
>"Let's go."

So why did Dr. Schultz suddenly shoot him? Because he lost? Dr. Schultz is more mature than Calvin. Being the bigger and wise man, he should've turned and walked away, not kill.

Django should've killed, honestly, since Calvin threatened the life of his wife and we all know how much of a trigger happy guy he is. Remember the scene in which he wanted to pull his gun out at the dinner table?
>>
>>64415470
Do you have that one kind of autism where you can't recognize the difference between faces?
>>
>>64415517
wow it's almost like shultz really isnt as clever as he thought causing him to kill candy
>>
>>64415615
Calvin did get the best of him and saw through his lies, but mainly thanks to Stephen. I think Django should've stepped up. It seemed very odd as to why he casually stood patiently until after Schultz's death to attack. The guy wanted to blow Calvin's head off the moment he arrived.

I would argue since 07 with 3:10 to Yuma remake (which was actually based on a book) and the Assassination of Jesse James

Unforgiven. Unfortunately, it's such an effective deconstruction of the genre that it might be difficult to fully enjoy another Western again.

Literally how so? Because they had a nickelbook character exaggerating his achievements, while living in a fantasy western town filled with typical brothel whores, and there's a typical genre gunfight at the end, accompanied by fucking lightning? lol

This was a better deconstruction of the genre, and it is based in reality.
