I've aways thought the best design will be something that can change blade length kinda like swords in Gantz. It will make the fight way way more unpredictable. Not to mention they have way to hook your nervios system to machines so controlling the length of the blade will be easy for jedy or sith. The fact you can in one sweep shorten your blade milliseconds before it would clash with other blade pass the parry and then extend it to double length so the jedy can't make half step or dodge it some other way will win 99% of the times not to mention you can fake straight cut jedy try to block the strike above his head then shrink the blade and extend it just to "stab" someone in the face.

I believe he tried to make his own synthetic crystal but couldn't do it right because he didn't have a blueprint like Luke, so he used the one that was the least of the worst.
