The existence of weapons like Starkiller Base makes it almost impossible to maintain a civilization anywhere in the galaxy. At least with the Death Star, it had to be in the system in order to blow up a planet.

But with the Starkiller Base, you can essentially blow up a planet from the other side of the galaxy from the comfort of your space couch (look at the galaxy map).

What this basically means is that it is nigh impossible to establish any form of political body, because the minute you piss someone off, they'll just snipe your capital system and all adjacent worlds unless there's some resource of immense value on said worlds. And the fact that Starkiller Base was essentially built by a terrorist cell (literally described by Abrams as akin to Nazis in exile that fled to South America) and was not found out until the weapon itself was already fired, this suggests that it's really easy to build these things if you have a readily available star and planet.

The ensuing arms race from here on out should therefore consist entirely of star systems pooling all their resources into building as many Death Stars as possible, while simply foregoing fleets altogether since their effectiveness as a deterrent has been categorically disproven.

tl;dr this kills the Star Wars.

Haha no way dude The Force Awakens is super amazing. I don't mind they had to retell the boring old grandpa version. It's got a bigger death star and a super diverse empowered cast haha. Y'all need to vote with your wallet and see it in theaters so Hollywood makes more amazing movies like this Haha

Just turn your brain off bro

Are you sure you want that to be your contribution?
>>
>>64370377
This is true but its going to be attached to Snoke. He's going to be the one who found the tech, helped terraform the planet and cored it. Shit like that.

'Its not possible otherwise, it uses shit we've never seen before.'

Just wait.

I'm not sure people in Star Wars really do a lot of science for some reason. Like, they don't invest in big R&D projects by default because it's not part of their culture. I mean, nobody in the movies is a doctor or scientist. I can't think of any other explanation as to why their world is basically in technological stasis except for super weapon development.

Nope. You move to a ship-based civilization. A mobile target is harder for something like the Starkiller to hit and since you are sinking all your resources into building an enormous fleet, the side that sinks its resources into planet-killing superweapons loses the arms race.

If things like the Starkiller can also hit ships easily then what you get is a mutually assured destruction cold war where both sides build apocalyptic weapons and engage in massive amounts of espionage to try to figure out where all the enemy superweapons are - but you are extremely reluctant to try for a first strike for fear that you've missed some and you will lose very important planets/ships in the retaliatory strike.

It's still a terrible idea to introduce an across-the-galaxy weapon but I doubt we'll see any logical repercussions, just as the new Star Trek film is ignoring the idiotic beam-across-the-galaxy and Magic Khan Blood Heals Everything plotlines in Into Dumbness.

>>64370377
No kill like overkill.
>>
>>64370377
I thought it was dumb that the resistance had to destroy a whole planet. Can we have a star wars victory without a huge explosion at the end? Power creep in SW is retarded.

Also it seemed to use up all the energy from its closest star. Can this thing travel or is it out of ammo permanently while the ice planet gets colder and colder until everyone dies?
>>
>>64370377
Good thing they destroyed it then. :)
>>
JJ is a literal retard.

He also ruined Trek by introducing casual planet-to-planet teleportation which pretty much changes how the Trek universe works.

For instance you can build hundreds of planet-buster bombs and simply teleport them to every hostile planet you don't particularly like and that's that. No use even developing ships further, just beam people to whatever planet you want, who the fuck cares.
Not to mention that he had a super secret shipyard near Jupiter that nobody knew about even though hundreds of ships would pass through the solar system probably daily due to it being a Federation hub. Apparently none of these ships have sensors etc...

Looks more like it siphons power from a star until the side of the planet with the siphoner rotates away from said star.

Needing to drain a whole star would be too costly and catastrophic to the planet itself.
>>
>>64370726
Misplaced priorities.
>>
Why don't they just use it to delete a system's sun. It would have the same effect and would be a more interesting plot device than blowing up the planets.
>>
>>64370377
Dude it's a pop corn flick. Turn off your brain. It's why they brought the Jurassic World guy aboard. Turn your brain off.
>>
>>64371089
No one raised an eyebrown when they heard about a supernova that could destroy the galaxy?
Did Nimoy not even asked about the line? He used to be serious about Trek
>>
How about we discuss what is the point of destroying planets when it takes the planets sun to power the thing killing it and draining the sun alone kills the planet so shooting it is overkill.
>>
>>64371289
Only if that made the sun go nova or something.

Otherwise it still makes at least a partial evacuation possible.
>>
>>64371414
wtf am i reading
>>
>>64371458
If you drain the sun you the planet so whats the point of blowing the planet up?
>>
>>64371414
It doesn't drainwhole stars and it also doesn't drain the stars of the planets it destroys. It has its own star that it siphons.
>>
>>64371492
it was going to blow up more planets
>>
>>64371531
whats the point of draining the sun when you drain the sun and kill planets?
>>
>>64371492
Blowing the planet up makes it impossible for people to try to escape.
>>
>>64371553
It wasn't draining the sun of the planets it was blowing up
>>
>>64371561
You do the same with the sun drained you ever seen a sun drained the whole galaxy freezes up everything dies instantly
>>
>>64370377
Science fantasy doesn't have to be plausible you dumbfuck
Nobody but losers read into this shit so much
>>
>>64371611
>instantly
there would be a delay
Didn't you ever see Sunshine
>>
>>64371652
The delay is negligible nearly minutes at best. By the time you realize what is going on, get on your ship you are dead.
>>
>>64371652
the sun didn't die in sunshine, it was slowly dying

but yeah there would be some heat left from the greenhouse effect if the sun suddenly disappeared
>>
>>64371708

Not just some; a lot would be retained for some time. The earth's magnetic field deflects a shittom of the sun's energy, so we don't actually take that much in per second, relatively speaking. If the sun winked out right now, the earth would cool rapidly, but not in, like, an hour.
