The script was utter dogshit. It looked great, the actors were admirable, solidly edited, atmospheric score. But the writing... you could tell the writer has amateur at best knowledge on the subject. It was all very hokey and sensationalist, with dialogue that wouldn't be out of place on a Law and Order episode (This is the land of wolves). And then there were the contrivances. That Jon Bernthal scene was such a mess from a writing standpoint. The motherfucker happens to have that specific wrist band linked to the drug money in a previous scene? Fuck off. And all the characters other than the three mains were just wastes. I give this movie a 6/10 based on the atmosphere, performances, and other little things, but this won't win any awards and rightly so.

Whose idea was it to involve a rookie FBI agent to legitimize their ops on US soil?
Who formulated the plan to nab Guillermo?
Who figured out how to find the tunnel?
Who nailed Diaz's finances and predicted they would come after Emily Blunt if she went into the bank?
Who drew up the play to get Benicio to Alorcon using Diaz as a Trojan Horse?

Everyone else in this film is elementary school and based Brolin is college.

Was getting shot in the face part of his plan?

No, but seriously, what did he intend to do? By this point all the Mexican gangbanger dudes had been wasted. He was literally alone among like 12 heavily armed dudes who he had just seen destroy his only possible support. Why didn't he just GTFO? Instead he tries to shoot le stronk womyn and gets popped like a bitch.
>>
>>64364880
I was wondering that too, but maybe he would be killed by the cartel if he didn't try to kill anyone.
>>
>>64364880
That's another thing I didn't understood.
I realize that no one in Mexico would care about some gangbangers getting wasted, but surely the Americans would care that a dozen or so people got wasted on their border, yet Brolin says "it won't even make the front page"
Does this movie take place in some more depressive dystopia?

The ending with the Colombian cartel taking power was fucking retarded though and felt unrealistic. What really happened was the usa gave the Sinaloa cartel funding to win the drug war because they were the most stable, low key, and most powerful that they would maintain order by operating out of the radar. another echo of this

the plot was a bit silly in places, but otherwise sicario was amazing for general cinematic quality

it's a pity that it wasn't a better story

i hope villeneuve keeps doing this kind of film though - i find his style being combined with the setting which this film took place in as a great combination

has anyone made a 3x3 of the best shots from the film?

i loved a load of the helicopter/bird's eye pans over terrain, the shots down corridoors, the toying with depth

the bit preceding the tunnels where the soliders are marching silhouetted across the field

and of course the massive suspense built during the convoy scene early in the film

but yeah villeneuve please keep doing this sort of film, where there's room for both claustrophobia and agoraphobia, unlike Enemy which i didn't enjoy for its bland use of colour and abstract plot

There are none. Weak plot /=/ Plothole.

The story isn't amazing but, as retarded as this will sound, the story was not the point. It's a film about the normalization of eroded American values and being frank and candid about how large government organizations are far more powerful and dangerous than criminal organizations.

Example: Kate's boss says that he doesn't have the authority to hire advisers, fly people around on jets, etc.. and that these decisions are made by 'elected officials, not appointed ones' but this is actually a lie. He says this in order to appeal to her 'by the book' mentality and twist it to seem that because the person who made the decision was elected, it's okay.

However, the CIA has been procuring large swaths of its own funding for Black Operations through drugs and the entire task force is probably the brainchild of the CIA.

This film is more about being frank and honest about day to day operations of clandentine organizations, and the shift in morality for modern day heroes. We want Del Toro's character to succeed, we want Brolin's character to have a successful operation. We're happy every time the CIA succeeds and the Cartels fail. Whereas Kate portrays the ideal police officer for a film from the 1960's, 70's, and even early 1980's, the 'New Action Hero' which is praised today are individuals with no moral compass and motivated by purely selfish desires- something which should be abhorred but is instead presented so seamlessly that you are rooting for the greater evil.

Some of the plotholes include the following:

Why would a cartel hide 100 dead bodies in the walls of a suburban house?

Why would a cartel use conspicuous bands to tie money?

How was the cop waiting at a bar randomly chosen by the black guy?

How did a prosecutor become a super badass operative capable of taking down the very people who trained him?

Why would an FBI agent care about signing a document under duress when she can just later report that she signed it under duress?

>>64373132

In fiction, a plot hole or plothole is a logical inconsistency within a story.[1] Such inconsistencies include such things as illogical or impossible events, and statements or events that contradict earlier events in the storyline.

We could make a leap of logic (and by leap of logic I mean headfirst dive into the abyss) and say he was already part of the team and knew the ins and outs (that is to say, he knew they needed an FBI agent to legitimise the operations), and the cartel were holding his family hostage or some such. So he decides to kill FBI even though it would mean his certain death, because that would fuck shit up for CIA and might earn mercy for his la familia.

Or we could just say the writing wasn't up to par.
>>
>>64373427

1) Kill houses exist. They are a real thing. It is cheaper than creating a factory of acid baths.

2) The mule, the Blond, had been using the bands. They were not conspicuous, they were just bands. It could have been her choice to use them, or they could just be using them because someone stumbled upon a crate of them.

3) Maybe it's her partner's favorite place. Maybe it's a common spot for Arizona PD people to go. Maybe there were plenty of crooked cops who were on the look out for her and the real coincidence is that the crooked cop is also her partner's buddy. It's improbable, but not impossible.

4) Prosecutors south of the United States often come from the stock of paramilitary or high-ranking police officers. It is by no means a stretch of the imagination to think he was once military police or a previously trained paramilitary soldier from the 1980's. The CIA was instrumental in training Latin American counter-terrorist and special forces.

5) The scene was more about the capitulation of Blunt's character to the erosion of American Justice and morality than the legality of her signing the paper. We are shown time and time again that she has a certain internal moral code which is constantly being stressed and tested throughout the film, and her signing the document is the final capitulation of her ethics and morals- she is now a broken woman.

Whew, just a couple more days and the children will have to start going to bed early again for school. Winter Break fills this place with more pseudo-intellectuals than usual.
