Edgar Wright made it work. It's also less smug and more self-aware than the stuff it gets lumped in with. Also Keiran Culkin was the best part of this movie, hands down.

he's got such a good eye for visual comedy, hope he doesn't try and chase the bucks like Pegg's done
It's a perfectly edited, very fun movie with a lot of re playability. It's just fun. A hell of a lot of jokes and background easter eggs that you might not even notice for multiple viewings.
Just read the comics today, they're also pretty great if you enjoyed the film.

Scott met the personification of his personality flaws and became friends with it instead of defeating it. They're both irritating hipsterish people and it's funny.
