I could never get into the design of this thing.

Even as a kid, the asymmetry of the cockpit being off to the fucking side made it impossible for me to enjoy the toys.

What a terrible design.

Also why if "Can make the kessel run in 12 parsecs" is a thing, then why in TFA is light speed instant travel.

>>

In the blu-ray extras they show how it came to be.
George wanted a ship that looked like a burger and the designers just kept adding stuff to make it really dense.
Also the cockpit is weird because it was initially planned to fly vertically but that was dropped.

I agree with OP and Luke. The Falcon was always piece of junk.

Symmetrical ships work great in-atmosphere, but GOAT sci-fi ships are asymmetric and non-aerodynamic because they fly in vacuums, and typically space ships don't have to worry about their size/dimensions due to space being fucking goddamn enormous

There was some later explanation about the Kessel run being the smuggling of drugs from a certain planet into a major hub.

You pick the route, the longer the route the more you might get caught, but the shorter routes are heavily patrolled so you get the same problems.

Basically saying he had the balls to roll right past the space cops with a trunk full of cocaine and get away with all his product.

to be honest I've always felt the same way.... I like the way some of the other ships (made by the same company that initially built the falcon's hull).

then again as I've grown older I've found myself more and more annoyed by how much fucking VTOL there is and how it's always such a fucking cop-out by the designers... who (in film, or video-games, or even pen-and-paper/tabletop games) seem to have a strong phobia against runways or landings strips.

Quite the opposite - the asymmetry enhances that thrown together quality that sets it apart. Your fixation of symmetry says more about your own hang-ups than about the design itself.

It's a classic dish-UFO crossed with commercial loading equipment.

The one we see is a riced up smuggling ship, but the front end literally looks like forklift prongs, like they'd nose it into a port and start loading crates through that central opening. The offset cockpit is to aid that kind of narrow maneuvering instead of regular flight.

That's why even in the movies they think it looks like shit.

that freighter design can also have the cockpit on the other side or even in the middle. you may be able to emulate this with the lego sets or even modifying a model.

my dream mod for this freighter would be to have the cockpit in the middle and then the have weapon pods on either side (where the cockpits are usually located) and have them disguised as something else.

>>
>>64337414
Mass then, sorry, I may be drunk a little and weight seemed to work in that sentence. I obviously meant mass. The thrust of the engine is working against the total mass of the space craft. Air resistance is negligible considering space, and the space dust is also negligible (unless ftl somehow factors that shit in). So the wings are pointless. They just add more mass and reduce distance traveled by the space craft.

Though if you want to get into a conversation about space and air craft then maybe it makes sense. But Star Wars never seems to make an effort to take into account the differences between space and air flight (ie. Millennium Falcon out running tie fighters on a desert planet).

>>64337404
I don't appreciate it's overall message, though obviously it does space flight better.

>>
>>64328410
You know what is funny OP. Just last night I was thinking the same thing. That the pilot would have to have an acquired ability to ensure he cleared on the left. And some of the flight sequences, especially in TFA shows even more why that little bitch could not fly it as she did. She woulda rammed the left side into the 1st solid object of size as she tried to navigate past or through, around..whateva.

Odd to see this thread now. Still, ship is cool. I mean, it is the fucking Millennium Falcon, the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 fucking parsecs.
