OP, cgi is pretty decent, but the problem is that CGI studios aren't consistent with the environment that they're putting their CGI in. Plus, the audience can tell when CGI is bad, and its a huge risk to immersion in the film.
Plus, its probably fucking time-consuming to animate everything.

CG for mattes = OK, pretty much just photoshop layers
CG for environments = Heavily depends, usually requires big budgets
CG for characters = You better have the time and skills to pull it off, big gamble either way
CG for particle effects = Never works. Never has there been a CG ocean, or CG explosion, or CG blood that tricked anybody. Timely fluid dynamics are still too far away computationally and will be for sometime.
CG animals = It better talk or fuck you.
