Like I get CG'ing Maz because she's this weird little alien that would be annoying to do with make-up, but this doesn't make any sense. It's like they were planning on him looking really unusual and dramatic during development than decided on something much more boring and prosaic after already filming Serkis' scenes but were too lazy/within contract to do reshoots with an actor in makeup.
It just looks bad.

That's exactly what happened. They didn't finalize his design until principal photography was almost over. He was going to a woman, then an alien, and they couldn't decide on shit so they went with Sheev 2.0
