What I don't get: Starkiller drains a systems star. Then Starkiller uses this energy to destroy the systems planets. All life on those planets would've been wiped out in a few hours as their sun was drained.

It did seem way too ridiculous on film, but it would be an interesting concept in a novel. Using hyperspace to deliver the beams to the planets instead of flying the deathstar to the target. Also using some kind of hyperspace portal to artificially draw the energy from the star into the planet, like a star in a binary system pulling gas from the other star until they nova. It's an interesting physics concept with space magic to make it happen.
